Shooting through brush, what size shot?

Where we hunt in W. central WI, is mostly woods. No fields, meadows, pastures or power line easements. Most of our birds are found in mixed conifers and hardwoods. No matter where we set up, we invariably end up shooting at our birds through brush. Smaller shot provides more pellets to get to the target, larger shot may get through the shrubbery better. What size shot would be preferred?
