HoW many Decoys?
How many decoys do you all use when out turkey hunting? I know some situatoins while stalking I don't use decoys but in the morning and late afternoon I try to setup and call them in. I usually use a small jake and hen for my decoys. What do you use?

RE: HoW many Decoys?
Well all I can say it depends. Depends on the time of season - early = more decoys, late = only one or maybe not at all and it is how the birds are reacting. Early maybe a Jake - maybe a Jake/hen breeding pair, late no Jake.
One thing for sure I own a flock - some given to me some bought. Placement - really don't put them out in the open very much at all. I place that when I get that bird in, it is the 1st thing he sees and then I can shut-up and get ready for the shot. Am a right handed shooter so placement is always slightly to my left. Never in front of me for obvious safety reasons! As I said before - I did have 3 Yahoos sneak my decoy spread. To me they where butterball hunters and should keep strictly to the Grocery store. hehe JW! |

I usually use a jake and 2-3 hens. Place them about 30 yards behind you, and you want to sit between the decoys and the gobbler. This way, if the gobbler gets hung up on the decoys about 60 yards or so out, that gives you and easy 30 yard shot.

RE: HoW many Decoys?
I'd be careful setting dekes behind you. It's a good idea, but it may not be safe. You should be able to keep an eye on your dekes in case some nut job comes stalking your dekes. Having them behind you may leave the opportunity for them to get behind you without you knowing. If I was to set up like this, I'd make real sure the tree I was against was wider than my shoulders....
