shot size for 20 gauge
My brother plans to come turkey hunting with me this spring. He plans on using a Winchester pump in 20 gauge. He has purchased a choke for the gun, some type of full choke thats for turkeys. What type of shot size should he obtain to find out which patterns the best for the gun.
Thanks in advance for your help. Thanks Dan |
RE: shot size for 20 gauge
i would go with 4's or 5's out of a 20, pattern it to see what works best, and call em in nice and close for him!

RE: shot size for 20 gauge
I nt with a 20ga all the time and get good results with Heavy shot in #4s. I try to keep my shots in the 35 yard range, but could go out to 40.

RE: shot size for 20 gauge
I'd try having him patterning #6 hevishot to get more pellets, and try to keep the shot within 30 yds. That being said, last year my boy killed one at 55 yds with #5 hevishot (he badly miscalculated distance in the heat of the moment). Another son killed one at 27 yds with a 2 3/4" 20 gauge using lead magnum #6s and an old 28" full choke barrell - stone dead rolled him.

RE: shot size for 20 gauge
You have to pattern your gun with different loads to see what works the best in your particular firearm. For example both my son & I hunt Turkeys with 20GA pumps; his a Winchester®, mine a Mossberg®. His gun patterns #5's superbly; mine not worth S#$T! Conversely mine patterns #6's like a house a fire; his not so. Both guns pattern #4's OK but nothing to sneeze at. It's a trial & error method to see what works best in a particular gun.

RE: shot size for 20 gauge
you have to pattern the gun. I would try to make sure I would use a magnum load & if you have the right choke I would give hevishot a try. If you can get a good dense pattern I would go with #6 hevishot.

RE: shot size for 20 gauge
I've found #4 Hevishot to be best, a full choke out performed an extra full with Hevishot.
#4 Federals performed well through an extra full. |
