Opinion on a gun

Was just wondering if the Mossberg 500 12g was adequate for Turkey? Was asked if I would like it for a Christmas gift and just wanted to get some experienced opinions about it. I have never turkey hunted but am gonna start in the spring when our season opens. So if anyone can give any advice and hunting tips it will be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance

In my opinion mossbergs are the only shotguns i would turkey hunt with for a few reasons they are inexpensive and tough they will take a beating and come back for more and if you scratch or nick the fininsh no big deal. Now if you went into the woods with your 700 dollar browning gold and and got dirt in it or scratched or nicked the finish it would probably make you feel sick. I know i felt sick when I took my browning gold out the first time I slipped crossing a creek and it went into that muddy water got scratched all over the forearm and the bead on the barrel broke off. I so would have kicked my self in the butt if i could. after that I starting using my mossberg 500 again and used it for awhile untill I bought a mossberg 835 ulti mag. the 500 is great will handle up to a 3 inch mag, with the right choke it can be very deadly on a turkey to 30 yards. The 835 handles up to a 3.5 inch mag which gives ya a little more shot pellet and makes a 40 yard shot possible.

great gun for the money. This will do everything that you would ever need to do.

Remington 870 express is better quality and more accurate than a mossberg for about the same price. For couple of hundred more the wingmaster is even better( my opinion...chevy vs ford syndrome). Mossberg is an ok over all weapon but will never compair to a Rem.

You will hear all kinds of opinions but my best advise is sit with the weapon as you would in the field and try it in a few diffrent scenarios. Then close your eyes then work the action and safety. See what feels natural.

Remington is the choice of many law enforcement and military units. Any weapon will kill a turkey but as for quality...that is a choice left to you.

To help make my above point.

Vols21 go check the firearms forum about "which gun". It is a survey asking " if you had to give up all of your guns what gun would you keep."

Remington is at the highest with 30% of person keeping.

Mossberg is NOT even on the list:eek:

I personaly like Winchester.

But what matters is what gun fits you personaly.

And what you can hit with.

I have heard good things about Mossberg

Good Luck

Then why is a Mossberg 590 the choice of shotgun for the navy seals, marine corp and LAPD SWAT??? with the newer rem 870's remington changed some things in their manufacturing ( cut corners) in reality the 870 today is no better or wourse then a mossberg 500. Now a older 870 I will admit is a superior shotgun asfar as few features go compared to a mossberg 500. Dont over look mossbergs, there is nothing wrong with them my mossberg 500 has had over 10,000 rounds through it between turkey magnums, steel shot magnums, and field loads and it still fuctions just like it did new when I got it 10 years ago. My mossberg 835 has been a strictly magnum gun its my turkey and goose gun its had easily 5,000 rounds of 3" and 3.5" magnums through it in the 7 years I have had it. And it still funtions as flawlessly as the day I bought it. I have never had to replace any parts on either gun. both guns have hunted in both ends of extreme weather from -15 below zero and blizzard, sleeting conditions during waterfowl season to 90 degrees 100% humidity and heavy rain during turkey season I have put my mossbergs through hell and they just keep coming back for more, I'm not saying an 870 won't handle that kind of hunting life because it will it is a tough gun aswell. All I'm saying is don't cr@p on the mossberg 500 just because in your opinion the 870 is better.

I shoot a Mossberg 500 for turkey, waterfowl and doves. Does a great job on all, and is durable.

Mossbergs are great shotguns for the money. I had a model 500 for years and never once had a problem with it. As Savages are great rifles for the money, so are the Mossberg shotguns. My .2 worth :]

I echo the sentiment that if you're hunting in dirty country and you drop or bang up your shotgun, you'd feel pretty bad if it cost you 800.00 as opposed to 200.00.
