835 Uti Mag Mossberg
My problem with this gun I just bought recently (used 2 years old) is that it seems to pattern to the left of my turkey targets. If I aim somewhat to the 3 oclock postion, then I nail the target with a good dense pattern. It has 2 sights on it, mid and at the end of the barrel. People tell me that Mossberg did not bore their chokes correctly or the barrel could be tweaked. It has a 28inch barrel with Mossbergs Ulti full turkey choke. (.690) I have shot numereous shells out of it since I bought it, 3, 3 1/2 inchers, and all the same result. Any one have a cure for this problem? One other question, what is a forcing cone? I have seen that terms on turkeyhunting.com. Would appreciate any help. I am brand new at turkey hunting, and this spring I am going to give it a try.

The easiest solution would be to put an adjustible rear sight on it to get the pattern where you want it. There's 2 or 3 brands out there that fit the 835. The forcing is the first step down in size on a shotgun barrel, just in front of the chamber, with the next step down being at the choke. In the case of an 835 it is backbored which I think means that it has only one step down and that's at the choke. Which also means that it needs to shoot a more open choke that a regular barrel. Some of the other guys here might have a better explanation of forcing cones though.

Yeah a set of adjustable tru-glo sites or a scope would fix the problem. This must be a common problem with the 835, I had one that shot a real tight pattern, Just about a foot high.

Thanks to both of you all for the reply, I will see about the sights and see if I can improve my performance. Yes it throws a tight pattern but to the left.

I had the same problem with my moss.500 it shot to the left as well. I thought it was just me. But I too put a tru glo sight on it and now it patterns well. Killed my first last season with it. I also use an undertaker choke tube with num.5 active shells.

RE: 835 Uti Mag Mossberg
I went to Cabellas magazine, and they do have the tru-glo sites. One says tru-glo pro. Is this sight adjustable to compensate for pulling to the left or right. It says it is adjustable for windage and elevation. Hope you under stand that I dont know to much about all this fancy stuff and scopes. I have been shooting shotguns for over 40 years and just used to the good old bead on the end of the barrel, until I bought this Mossberg 835 Ulti Mag.

Mr. Longbeard,
I have a Remington also,12 gauage Model 11, very old, but shoots real good. I dont deny it. I grew up with Winchesters pumps and semis, and I really love those guns. But since I got the Mossberg, I met my challenge, and I dont back down from challenges, so when I conquer this off to the left shooting gun, there will be some dead turkeys down here in the south. Yeah swamp, that is the windage part of the adjustment. You will also like the light gathering ability of the tru-glo sites. There are several brands of sites to choose from, I just mentioned Tru-Glo.Just be sure and order the right one for your gun, they do come in different widths. |
