What slate calls do you like? Are custom slates better then production?

I have a Primos slate and a Lohman. Both work and sound great, one is no better than the other. The Lohman glass call is higher pitched and louder, the Primos lower pitch and more quiet, and I can produce different sounds using the different strikers on each. I dont believe there is any one better than the other, nor any one company better than the other. All a matter of personal preference, but overall it doesn't matter what we think, only what the birds think.

Pot style friction calls are my favorite. I use the Quaker Boy Triple Threat now, because in one call I get three distinct sounds. I get a good slate, a high pitched aluminum, and a subtle plexi surface.

I like custom calls better than production calls. I have a Blodgett Tough Country slate that I think might be the most versatile friction call I've ever played. It's just incredible. On the other hand, I don't wanna use that call in the rain so I bought a M.A.D Aluminator. It sounds better than most mass-produced calls. If you don't want to spend money on a custom call, but want awesome sound, check out the Premium Glass and Slate calls from Penn's Woods.

I always carry two slates. One is a Cody and the other is made by Chestnut Ridge. They both have very distinct sounds and the turkeys seem to like them. The Cody would have to be my favorite.

I like custom slate calls myself, I like the sound you get out of a wooden pot better than a plastic pot call.
