Get a series of different calls that range from subtle to high freq...somtimes a bird will answer to something different.
Spend alot of time scouting where you'll be hunting so you know the terrain.
Use terrain features to your advantage...set-up such that you can't see the bird until he's in range since that's when he can see you.
Try something different if a bird hangs-up just out of range like scratching in the leaves, or turning your call away from the bird to make him think the hen is leaving.
Use a two man set-up when possible with the shooter up from and the caller 10 yards behind.
Just some things that have worked for me.

My meager recommendation, in addition to practice your calling, is to scout when possible and try pattern the turkeys' movements. I would venture that good locations along the turkey's travel routes might make up a little for less than perfect calling technique.
