Choosing a new shotgun.
In a few months I am going to buy a mossberg 500. It is $175. It is nice. Shoould I get it? What is another light, cheap and reliable 12ga? The most I am willing to pay is $250.00. Thanks,

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
Mossberg 500 is a ok gun for that price but i would buy a Remington 870 Express and put a Remington Ventilator choke in it.

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
It will do at that price. You can always get a better shotgun at a later date. I have been shooting Mossberg's fo over 30 years and they have never let me down yet. I own 3 Mossbergs 2 12 gauges and a 20 gauge. Only problem I have ever had with them is the safety botton breaking off.

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
without a doubt, for a few bucks more, a remington 870, I wounldn't waste my money on a mossberg.

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
I would too spend just a few more dollars and go with the Remington.

About how much would an 870 cost?

VA Hunter15
I got my 870 supermag during Christmas and it cost me $270+ tax. I love the 870's, never had any problems with them. I don't know much about the mossberg 500 but I do know you can't go wrong with the 870. |
RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
i would go w/ a rem 870 express. i bought one a couple of years ago w/ a 21" barrel and a super full rem choke and i love it. i paid about $280. i would not waste my money on a mossberg.

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
Are they as light as a mossberg? I want a real light weight gun.
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quotequote:
Buy ya an 870 either express or supermag and put a remington Ventilator choke on it and you got one hell of a turkey gun. Just pattern it and match the right shell to the choke and you got a gun that will hammer the turks everytime out to 40 yards. If you buy that gun and that choke you will never buy another turkey gun again

|

Go with the 870 express. Check around and you can find it for about 250 maybe a little more. Where are you looking?

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
The mossberg 500 is a great gun. It may not be the best but it is a good all around gun. I use one for turkey and it has performed well. Killed my first bird last season with it. Plus the extra barrels and chokes are not as expensive as most.

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
Around where in hampton? I am in Newport News. I was looking at a Mossberg 500, camo, choke tube, 6 shot capacity, for $233 at Hampton Wal-Mart. I will get an 870 more than likely

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
I go with the one that feel right when I shoulder the gun, I have both,A Remington 870 Express 21in barrel with a Ventilator choke tube and a Mossberg 500 with a 20in. Accu-choke barrel that uses a Hasting choke tube,Both guns shoot's good,The Mossberg is a ligther gun.

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
i have a 870 camo supermag, the gun shoots awesome and is deadly on turkeys.
the only drawback, is when shooting 3 1/2 shells, it kicks like a mule!!! ARO http://www.hunting-pictures.com/memb...hanesmith.html |
RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
I'd say that an 870 is going to be about the same weight as a mossberg 500(maybe a little heavier). I can get one for about $240-$250 arounf here. I also like the winchester 1300. It is light and doesn't have as nasty of recoil as the 870 or 500. They run about $240.

I live in Foxhill. You should check at the Pawn shop on Mercury, by the K Mart. He will order stuff and beat Walmart.

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
I've heard nothing but good things about the NEW Mossberg 835s. I guess on the older 835s the slide rails used to rattle, but they have fixed the problem in recent years.

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
I like the Mossbergs, I have a new 835, 3.5 inch ulti-mag for turkeys. And I own a Mossberg New Haven 12 gauge with a weaver scope on it, for deer. As long as you take time to practice with it and feel comfortable shooting it, you should be fine. These days no matter what you get next year, seems like there is always something better. Good Luck!

RE: Choosing a new shotgun.
I have a mossberg 500 and 870 supermag both are very good guns the 500 is cheaper but very dependable. The 870 is a good gun also but cost more and looks a little better.
