How to get started turkey hunting?

My dad never hunted turkey and my hunting partner doesn't either. Where can I pick up some basics for hunting turkey?

8Ball,
You definitely live in a good state to learn to Turkey hunt. I can't imagine you not being able to find someone to show you the basics. If you can't and you have access to prime land in say Texas Co., wait just a minute and I'll be right there. LOL
All kidding aside, when I started about 12 years ago I didn't know anybody in Southern IL that hunted turkeys. I pretty much learned through videos and magazines. They never really completely prepare you for what you are about to experience when a bird gobbles just over the ridge at 50 yds. and hangs up. The best teacher is experience with the birds themself in the woods. The hardest thing for me to figure out that first year was just how close was too close to a gobbling bird. Again, experience is your best teacher. The best advice I can give you is to try to get out in the early part of March and April when the birds are gobbling and listen to them in the trees and on the ground. Move in and watch them if you feel comfortable with not spooking them. DO NOT CALL TO THE BIRDS BEFORE SEASON. This just makes them tougher to call in during season. The number one way for you to learn will be to try to locate someone who knows what they are doing and get them to show you some of the basics.
I know people who's calling is far from being top quality, but they kill turkeys every year, so don't be fooled into thinking good calling is a cure all. With that said, learn to use and become proficient with as many calls as you can. The combination of knowing a birds habits and excellent calling can go a long way together.

8Ball:If you cann't find anyone to show you the ropes first hand, books, magazines and videos will help you gain some knowledge on how to get started at least. If there any turkey hunting seminars in your area,go to those, listen to the speakers, and ask as many questions as you can. Then get out there and give it your best!Trial and error will be your best teacher once your out in the woods.I had nobody take me out hunting turkeys my first time and it took me 3 years to get my first one,but I have been succesful my last 6 years.Once your out there, it can become a very addicting sport. GOOD LUCK!!

Get a turkey hunting video. It's an easy way to learn the basics of hunting turkey. It's also good to find a buddy who has hunted turkey and let them show you how. Good luck hunting.

Try Your library. Sometimes you can find video's or they can get them. You can might even find a good book. Reading "Spring Trukey Hunting" by John McDaniel now. Keeps the fire burning... :)
