LOG ROADS ???????
 

SHOULD LOG ROADS BE OPEN UP FOR DEER TURKEYS? AND MAYBE PLANTED IN CLOVER? I HAVE 40AC. IT HAS BEEN TIMBER 15 YEARS AGO WITH ROADS RUNNING THUR IT,, SHOULD I OPEN THEM UP ???? WASP 2

I have had the best luck for the past couple of seasons walking logging roads and peeking around the corners trying to catch a gobbler strutting. When i see on i set up just inside the corner and call sparingly. Last spring this tactic yielded two nice mature gobblers.

On paper company land, the birds will gravitate to the logging roads and the decks to strut. I'll usually begin walking the roads about 2pm. If you don't see anything, you can still position yourself next to a known roost site to see if you can hear any fly up. When you leave, do a couple of fly-up cackles while simulating wing beats and some soft yelps. Be in that spot before first light, but be careful. Last couple time i did this in NY with my buddy, he found that two gobblers had roosted in the very tree we did the fly-ups from the day before. Good luck.

I would open them up for a couple of reasons. First, deer and turkeys often follow a path of least resistance. Second, they make great food plot locations. And Third, They make it easier to be quiet while moving.

XXMag, SOME logging roads allow a place to dust, but not all. The ones i have on my property are as hard as concrete. Around my parts, dusting is confined to freshly worked ground and since it is against the lease policy to alter a road in any way, that usually means the fields.

I hunt logging roads alot. Turkeys use them alot because they are easy to walk on and gobblers use them as strutting areas to so they can be out in the open where the hens can see them. They are great for putting decoys in so they are visible to toms. If you are on top of a hill and there is a gobbler below with a logging road between, chances are he will walk up the road on his way up if he intends to come. Logging roads are a good tool to use in the spring.

In my country, logging roads are the only way to hunt. They cover so much area and it makes for easier walking. Sometimes we will walk thru the woods, but it is so noisy and the terrian is usually rough. They are a great for scouting as well, tracks, dropings, dustbowls, etc.
