:D

I've only been turkey hunting for two seasons now but here is what I have for you. First off, welcome to the club. Turkey hunting is like nothing else. And I love it and it's challenges, which are many.

As for offering information, all I can recomend is the following. I get two magazines; Turkey Call, and Turkey and Turkey Hunting. I listened to all the free information from seasoned turkey hunters. But for me, the best information that I've found so far is what I've gotten here on this site. I read and re-read through all the post until I got a handle on the basics. The members on the site are really great at offering excellent information, the kind that helped me get my birds. Two years in a row, starting out as a pure green horn.

Hope it helps, sorry about not being able to list books or videos, etc.

do a search on: turkey sounds . you can download and listen while practicing on your calls.read articles on hunts and you will really learn when you go in the woods before daylight, hear them, call them and make mistakes.the best advice i ever got was PATIENCE.

welcome,i would recommend purchasing a box call and a audio tape of turkey talk and practicing the basic yelp, cluck and purr over and over, the bread and butter of spring hunting.then you can progress to slate and mouth calls and other variations of turkey talk.maybe get a hunting video and a good all around book on the subject.reading your post it sounds like you have some experience in the woods and probably have a idea what type of gun and choke you need.my best advice is to monitor this forum, scouting, location, preparation, clothing, tacti cs,etc, etc, these people have more knowledge collectively than any book or video.good luck.

Find yourself a mentor. That's the quickest way to get up to speed. You can avoid a lot of trial and error that way.

I guess finding a mentor is easier suggested than done. I was lucky in that regard - it was my brother.

But I would not be surprised if there aren't some folks on here who would enjoy hunting with you if the chance came up. There are other turkey hunting boards around also, and you might broaden your contact base that way. You might find a mentor at a local NWTF chapter also.

Ask here, IF you have land to hunt i think there are many guys on here that woudl love to come to a new place to call in a big ol tom for ya and show you some tips and tricks.

Last year was my first year. I was just like you lost as hell. I got DVD on it a couple of books and asked alot of questions on here. I bagged 2 toms and a jake. Not too bad for my first year. But i will tell you alot of turkey hunting for us beginnners is luck and from what i hear it plays a big part for advanced turkey hunters. Dont give up. Man i called and called and sat many days in the forest and then it just happened. It will get frustrating to hear that tom just out of your reach and he wont come in. Be patient.

Just read and read and listen to those recorded turkey sounds and ask a ton of questions on here. All the people on here are very helpfu. Oh ya, look at old message threads i am sure someone has asked some of the questions you are thinking about.

good luck, you have plenty of time to get ready for spring season. I am chomping at the bit already, thank god for deer season to help me get a fix :D

Definitely get the mag Turkey and Turkey Hunting and the CD "Spittin' Feathers". The CD will teach you the basic calls and many of the do's and don't's of turkey hunting. It was a big help to me when I got started.
