gobbler sound ?
This spring while working 2 gobblers in a field with live hens I was able to call the gobblers to within shooting range. The setup was not perfect but had no choice since the birds were above us in the field and I couldn't see the birds as they came in. Anyway as I was calling the gobblers were coming and gobbling as they did. It was clear that there was 2 different bird doing the gobbling. When they got really close I heard a sound that I don't know what it was and which bird made it. The sound was like a cough or a start of a gobble that was cut short. It was deep and raspy but short. I should tell you 1 bird was a jake and the other a longbeard. My guess it was the jake who made the sound after being put in his palce by the longbeard. Anyone ever heard such a sound or your thought on what it was?

RE: gobbler sound ?
Bt9,
welcome to the forum, sounds like you had a very exciting hunt this past spring.Did you manage to harvest the bird?Anyway yes I've heard both jakes and gobblers alike make such sounds. And old gobblers yelp (of which they can and will do)can sound like an old dog bark and jakes particicularly in the fall can be quite comical the sounds they make as there voice is developing.I've heard jakes that have a very difficult time rattling out a gobble and as a result sound more like a yell than anything else...:) |
RE: gobbler sound ?
yes took the longbeard at 12 yrds. I thought I was going to shoot both birds they were so close. We actually heard the birds gobble at 6:15am from afar and went after them. I know the area and knew they were going to be hard becuz they were up in the fields atop a knob and the approach would have to be from below the rim of the fields. The shot finally happened at 9:45a. awesome time

Brokenbucket
Which bird do you think made the sound, the jake or the longbeard? It was a thrill to hear it for the 1st time. |
RE: gobbler sound ?
Bow,
Either of the birds could have "barked", but it was most likely the older bird. Even hen yelps will sound like a dog barking, the farther away she is when calling. |
RE: gobbler sound ?
One of the nicest gobblers I've ever harvested to date hit me back with a very low base gobble on the initial set calls I threw his way and then did nothing but bark in response to my calls the rest of his way in!At the time I was so intent on hearing a response in the form of a gobble I didn't even realize that strange sound was my gobbler working his way in until he was inside a 100 yards and closing. At first I thought it was just a lousy sounding box caller but seeing the bird on the next ridge over changed my thoughts abruptly!;)Cool name Dave![8D] I like it!Even better is the sig!!!!!!!LMAO[8D]

Ya know, some or I should say the most awful calling that I hear in the woods are the real turkeys. Someday maybe they will learn, how to call. lol
