question about jakes?

alright, the past few times ive been going to town i have to pass through a town of 50 ppl, and there has been this jake with its babies(dont know the correct term for turkeys chicks?) but the jake is not the typical black looking color that the other ones are this one is really gray, almost to a white in somespots. i havent had a camera with me orelse i would have a picture to show you. but is that normal? or is this kind of a peabald type turkey?

Did you say jake because you seen a beard? If so there is a small % of hens that have beards;)

I think you are definitley seeing a hen. The young turkeys are called poults.

Y-gun..the term jake refers to a tom/male bird that is generally only about a year to year and half old!Toms have nothing to do with the raising of the chicks which are referred to as poults! Its very possible the hen you are seeing has a beard, its not all that uncommon nowadays! As far as the coloration is concerned it is possible the bird has some tame blood in him or there is the possibilty the bird being wild ,sports a gray or smoky faze that many even on board here have seen in the wild..heres a pic of a gobbler with unusal color variations....

ok, i was misinformed, ive always been told that jakes are the females. thats my bad, i guess ya its a hen, i saw it again tonight. its got normal feathers underneath but gray to white ones on top with very little other colors in it. SORRY, i dont hunt turkeys so that could probably have something to do with why i called it a jake. im sorry for the misinterpretation. It kinda looks like the picture that bobgobble posted but with a little more color on the underside.
