Do you still practice
For about the first 5 year I turkey hunted I would practice with my turkey calls on and off from Feb till the season opened. Mostly with my mouth call. Now I find my self messing around with them maybe 2 or 3 times right before the seaon come in. I use to buy a lot of turkey calls also. I must have 12 friction calls and at least 20 strikers. I finally got that addiction under control

RE: Do you still practice
I donate a couple of strikers to the turkey bush every year. I have a vest with velcro pockets but I always seem to leave one behind[:@]
This gives me an excuse to go out and buy more calls and so I'm going all the time practicing with new stuff. I am going to buy a few mouth calls and finally focus on this type for next year. I figure trolling for lake trout this summer will be a perfect time to call away! |
RE: Do you still practice
I practice every spring, from late January until turkey time, plus I played the "calling contests" game last spring and this spring, (I suck) with mouth diaphragms. Then, during the season, I get sick of it, so only call in the woods, and en route in the a.m. After the season, I put 'em away and pick up my duck and goose calls, which I also suck at, and blow them until October.
I buy a lot of turkey hunting junk, including calls, at this time of the year, when the retailers close out their lines to make room for fishing gear & other sporting goods, because the closeout prices are so danged dirt cheap. Then I have to "wait 'til next year" to use 'em, which is a challenge to my patience, but I can do. |
RE: Do you still practice
I have not practiced too much in the last couple of years , but plan on starting on a regular bases, I'm back in Compation mode again after my big 2 year event is now over. If I can place 2nd in a NWTF open, 1st in the NWTF Friction, and 1st in the Resident,1st in the Owl hooting , with out much practicing , I should be able to pull off a first with practice in a Open...BT

RE: Do you still practice
i dont compete or anything so theres not really any major need for me to practice everyday but i probably break out the calls once a month but i buy them everytime i see them ive actually run out of call pockets on my turkey vest

RE: Do you still practice
I practice atleast once a week all year round. I usually take my mouth call with me to work and practice while driving around. I believe the more you practice the more it becomes second nature so that when you start a series of calls it just flows. Just IMO though. Pat
