well, its the 11th hour here in NY.
for the past 15 years, i would go out opening day, get a big one, go out the next day, get another and then video and call for friends.
THIS YEAR i hunted EVERY SINGLE DAY( 40mph winds, thunderstorms, you name it) from sunrise to 10, 11 or 12 oclock. it took me 29 damn days to finally score on a tom!
i have never had such a bad run of luck, ever! they zigged when i zagged, shucked when i jived, and all around made a monkey outta me! i heard birds every day, at least one gobble, sometimes hundreds, and couldnt do a thing with them. what a sideshow!
yesterday the same 3 jerks i'd been workin all this time came in on a string right off the roost, running thru the field to get to my calls. i got the biggest, a 19lb 9inch (broken beard) bird with 1-1/4 spurs (my best) at 25yds. not the longest beard or heaviest bird i've gotten, but i'm leading the pool at the local pub. win the pool or not, this will go down as the craziest, most memorable season ever.
i was chased by skunks, saw a fisher, a porcupine and lots of coyotes came to my calls. i also found a box turtle, (rare in my area) and got attacked by a canadian goose (dont ask).
my sons also got to hear three birds triple gobbling for 1/2 hour, that was something we wont forget.
and as a bonus, i lost 35 lbs in 29 days, thanks to the stupid toms roosting all over the cliffs, valleys, swamps etc in my area.
so thats that. ive got 2 more mornings to go, then i'm going to sleep for 2 weeks straight!
