RE: Western Md turkey hunters

Living in Frederick Co., I'm not located in the better Western Maryland turkey counties, but I have done a lot of scouting and turkey hunting this year and have located some turkeys. I took the first week of the season off and hunted every available hour, getting into the woods 1/2 hr. to an hr. before light every day. I heard a lot of gobbling this first week and had some birds I was working, but wasn't successful in getting any in range to take the shot. The 2nd Sat., I went to Pa. and hunted with my cousin, who has been chasing these pea brains for 25 years, and we both bagged a nice gobbler. Since then I have hunted every Sat. with a few week days thown in, down here in Md., and have heard no gobbling whatsoever. I know the birds are still there because one morning I bumped 3 birds from a roost I have never seen them use before.

But to answer your question, I have not heard a gobble for weeks in Md.

B/C way to go on that Pa Gobbler. Were you guys hunting on private or public land in Pa?

My buddies were in Green Ridge on Saturday (22nd) and heard about a dozen gobbles, but couldn't close the deal.

I went to Garrett county yesterday for the last day of the season. The wind was howling, but we did hear 1 gobble 1 time at a little after 6.

S&D those birds get hammered in Green Ridge. No surprise your buddys came home empty handed... I hunted there opening day and had hunters come in on me from two different directions. Read my post on public land blues... My brother hooked me up with some property up in the Keystone State:D Not a lot of birds but no pressure and I have seen gobblers every time I've been there:D

Mr. LB,

We hunted public land in Pa. It was the 2nd Sat. of the season and we didn't see another hunter!!

I'm guessing you hunt public land in the middle or upper part of Pa or the western part of Pa.

You almost got them all covered there, but we hunt in the east central part of the state.

I figured the eastern part of Pa was hammered a little harder than the rest of the state.

Just curious if you had any luck this year...

Longbeard,

We were up at GreenRidge for the first 2 days and I couldn't believe all the gobbling we heard. My friend wound up missing one on the second day there. He went back up to Green Ridge on the first Saturday and rolled a 9 inch beard. All in all, my friends hunted Green Ridge all season, and although there are other hunters in there, you can get away from them and get into birds. Everytime up there this year (probably 9 or 10 trips),
someone heard gobbling close and rarely did we get interfered with by other hunters. You just gotta put some miles on your boots and try to get away from the roads and trails (easier said than done sometimes).
