16-gauge pattern results
Fired my dad's old bolt action 16-gauge (adjustable choke set at full) for the first time yesterday and wanted to get your opinions on my pattern. (if i get a turkey this season my dad will by me a new gun).
I used Winchester Super X 2-3/4in size 6 shot. The target was at 25 yards. Do you think this is good enough at 25, or am I going to have to reduce my range even more? ![]() ![]() |
RE: 16-gauge pattern results
I would think you are patterning for the 25-30yds , I would keep it in that range my friend....BT

RE: 16-gauge pattern results
keep it around 25 or 30 yards & you should be ok. you might also want to try a couple of brands of shells. one may be better than the others.

RE: 16-gauge pattern results
ncBloodhound Your pattern is good at 25 but before you try and take a turkey at 30 you might want to pattern it at 30 first. 5 yards makes a big difference and a lot of those vital hits might go away.

RE: 16-gauge pattern results
Mr.Lonbbeard makes a good point 5 yards either way will make drastic changes to the success of your overall pattern!:)

RE: 16-gauge pattern results
Thanks for the advice! I plan on trying other shells shortly, but it is really hard to find 16-gauge ammunition, especially in specific shot sizes. All K-mart has is Winchester 6 and 8s. Walmart doesn't have any. I will be going to the nwtf national conference this weekend. I will check there, and at Bass Pro in Charlotte.

Hey NCbloodhound, pattern looks good to me. I was over your way on valentine's day and ate at the Boone Inn. Great place and a great town. I'm from just outside of Johnson city, Tn

RE: 16-gauge pattern results
HighKnob, I have lived here for 4 years and have yet to eat there. Everyone tells me how good it is, but it is always so crowded. I plan on eating there soon though. I was out your way at a range near watauga lake patterning my shotgun. I plan on going to Wideners Reloading and Shooting Supply in Johnson City sometime next week to look for more ammo. You hunt in NC at all?
