RE: who all has killed a turkey this spring so far

For Team Nine--

1 bird in Minnesota
1 bird in Kansas
1 bird in South Dakota

I still have a tag for Kansas, and hope to go back in a couple of weeks.

Also, my wife got a bird in South Dakota, and has a permit for southeastern Minnesota we hope to fill. (If she does get a bird in Minnesota right away, I'll take the extra days off to go to Kansas. If we hunt all my time off in Minnesota for hers, then I won't return to Kansas.)

RE: who all has killed a turkey this spring so far

Got my first Turkey ever today on Opening day. 12 1/2 pound Tom.

Got up at 4 Monday morning. got to spot too find two other hunters. Went
to my clump of trees in the middle of the field while still dark and set
up two decoys. started some light calling. Nothing for two hours.
Had watched a BIG Tom Strut here the afternoon before.
Got up and went for a walk and tried to locate them. heard one gobble,
but nothing came in to me when calling back.
Went back to the field. stopped for a drink from my water bottle in the
field. Suddenly a Turkey run out of the tall leftover dead plants of
last years crop garden, 15 yards from me, He wobbled quickly back into
the woods. a young Jake it appeared.
As I looked at the back of the field, I watched three more birds running
for the wood line.
I then walked quickly to my spot from this morning which offered great
cover and a blow-down for a great gun rest. I set up my two decoys 15
yards from my position. I waited a few minutes for things to calm down,
then begun to call with some yelps. The three birds shortly there after
entered the field where they had left, about 100 yards away from me and
was slowly but steadily heading to the center of the field.
about 3/4 of the way up to me they seem to really like the decoys. I
then gave a couple purrs and a cluck on the slate call. Before I knew it
the three toms where at the decoys. Put the fiber optic sight of the
winchester 12 ga. on the biggest ones neck and at 10:29 a.m. I had my
first bird.
I would of liked to have bagged the one I watched the night before and
had him "Strut" his way in. I bet he went 24 lb. Well, gotta start
somewhere.
I can still call for another hunter but can not carry a gun. One tag,
one bird. send ya pic's when I get them back.
Was not to bad to clean. I skinned it and got it in the freezer.
