##5,shot###

...ive came to believe my 835,will not shoot #5 shot...sad but it sure will throw a wad
of #6 shot,HV winchester supreme,im shooting a xxxfull comp-n-choke.at 40 yards
the pattern was unreal,inside a 8 inch circle..to many to count..shooting with a scope
i guess it will be #6 shot again..Question??does anyone know the killing power
difference between #5 shot...and #6 shot at 40 yards..thanks for any info..[:-][:-]

ToeToe,

did ya try #4s? Iuse Winchester Supremes in #4s. I did use 6s but the whopping power of 4s and muzzle velocity made me change.

Totoe, you might want to try a box of Hevi-Shot in size 6, I hear they have as much or more down range power than the lead 5 shot.

You could have two identical guns; same gauge, consecutive sn#'s, same chokes, same ammo and they will shoot differently.[&:] My son's gun shoots great patterns with Remington® 3" Mag #4 & #5; and it's a Winchester® gun! :eek:Won't shoot Winchester ammo® worth a darn.[:'(] Any ammo in #6 is just so-so; OK for pheasants but not a tight enough pattern for turkey. My gun (Mossberg®) shoots #5 & #6 superbly with Federal® ammo.:) With #4's I couldn't hit the side of a barn; go figure.[:'(]

Are you using 3" or 3½" ammo? Also what brand Federal®, Remington®, Winchester®, Fiocchi®, Kent®?

I have the same set up as you do with the same results with #5 over #6 this is what I found out. In oder to shoot #5 out of your 835 I believe you need a choke a with a more open costriction. The xxx full has a costriction .670 which is made to shoot #6, the tighter the costriction the smaller the shot size. So to shoot #5 try going with xx full choke with a costriction of .680.

My 835 is the same way, I really wanted to go with #5's but the pattern just wasnt there. #6's were so much better ....strange that such a small change would make such a difference.

i had CARLSONS CHOKES cut and install a turkey tube on my browning A500G FOR #4 SHOT.it is .670 dia. which they say normally gives better patterns for the larger shot.it is my understanding that .660 is for #6;.665 is for #5 shot; and .670 is for#4 shot.however,as stated above, every barrel shoots differently with various loads by different manufacturers.i have never tryed the #5 or#6 shot so i cannot make any comments about them other than they are smaller, have more pellets in a load AND have less knockdown capability past 40 yds than the #4s.if you shoot the bird at 30 yds, it really doesn;t matter which choke or size shot you use in either my 870 or a500g, but at 45 yds. it is a different story.you just have to know the effective range for YOUR gun and load you shoot.

Totoe, I have one of the first Mossberg 835's made. I normally shoot Winchester #4 HV's with the choke tube that came with the gun. Which is the extra full turkey tube. It smokes 'em at 40 yrds!! This year I'm trying the MADD MAX tube, with a .690 constriction. I will be using winchester #5 HV's , which is the recommended shot size. I will let you know how it patterns when I go to Pennsylvania for their opener!!

Ps: I forgot to tell you that I'm shooting 3" shells........
