Sanding striker calls in the woods

I always sand my glass, aluminum, steel, etc. calls just before I leave my truck to walk in the woods. However, the long walks I have to make usually cause the suface to "smooth out" enough that I don't get a good sound unless I sand them again once I've arived at my hunting spot. When I do that though, it makes a fairly loud sound that doesn't sound natural to me. Is there a better way to accomplish this?

use a pouch or find a lid cover for your calls , Tupperware has lids in different sizes that may fit your pot calls. This is one of the hard problems to get around, and I understand the problem you mean. Covers tend to work best...BT
