Photo Essay - Breeding/Mating - X- rated! :)

Note: pictures courtesy of dog1.

Well these pictures where shared with me and I’ll post and share with you.

This will give beginners a good look at mating. I’ll let dog1 tell you where these where taken.

We wake up to early morning fog and wait. It is not long before the field is just chucked full of turkeys feeding.

It is not too long and as the fog lifts out walks two Dandy Toms.

A close-up

Even closer Yet!!!!!

Now these boys are lookin’ for a gal! And I think they have found one

Still looking

Now look close - a hen has laid down indicating she is in the mood to breed…..ya that is right the ladys call the shots or at least I thinks so…..no different for us huh? 

He moves in for the mount as he walks on her back

Wings down – Contact!!

All done = Okay ladys whose next? 

Thought ya like to see this.

JW!

I saw a big tom breed a couple hens about a week ago. It was the first time I had seen it and man it looked painful for the hens. As far as I could tell and I was about 80 yards away with binoculars, it basically looked like the longbeard just stomped on the hen for about 5 minutes each. Strange but exciting event.

Just plain awesome pictures. Thanks a ton for sharing, some really good info about what's going on behind the scenes in the woods. Nice to know the Toms are taking care of business too before we go blasting them.

Great pics. Makes you think that having a decoy that lays down might not better attract that breeding tom, though, doesn't it??

I just saw a big tom breeding a hen on Saturday. I couldnt figure out what it was at first till I brought up the binoculars. The I could tell what was goin on. Anyway he was on her for a little bit, then hopped off. they circled each other for about 5 minutes, then he was right back on her. I decided to leave them alone while doing their thing. But it was still neat to see, that was the first time I saw that for myself, the only other times I saw that was on video's.

Re the photos' JW posted. A friend of mine took these from a home made blind that he placed in a rye patch back of his home. The season opened on the 20th, and believe it or not, the only gobbler he has seen up close since taking the pictures was a gobbler he set up under, unknowingly, that was on the roost. The bird flew down at daylight and away from him, never saw the bird again.

This man is a good turkey hunter and is just about to go crazy because of not being close to one since opening day. Needless to say, I have rubbed a little salt into the wounds, no, I'm lieing, I've rubbed a lot of salt in and even kicked a little dirt on him. Don't ya'll go feeling sorry for him either, cause I'll assure you, he has rubbed some in on me over the last 30 years.

He's also a good photographer.

dog1--I'm amazed that your friend hasn't scored yet. There's 10 times the turkeys I SEE in a whole season in just one picture. With a flock like that, he'll score.
