questions from a novice
I have an older 12 ga Browning BPS with an improved cylinder barrel. Is the IC choke adequate for turks? If so any recomendations for shells?
My permit is good from 4/19-4/25. I have work to during the day so are there any techniques for hunting them in the evening? Thanks for the Help. |
RE: questions from a novice
I won't tell you that it won't work, but it's definitely not the preferred choke to use. If you want to see how effective your pattern is, take a 30" square sheet of paper and put your target (aiming point) in the center and shoot the gun at various distances starting at 15 to 20yds and move back 5yds and repeat on a new sheet of paper. For the IC choke, I would recommend trying #4 shot and start with your brand of choice. See how that does and if the patterns are remotely acceptable, buy different brands of shells and shot sizes to look for improvements. Personally, I would recommend getting at least a full choke for turkey hunting.

RE: questions from a novice
Go to Walmart or gun shop and get you a full turkey choke for your gun. IC is only going to hurt the bird, you may get him if he is real close but the limited time you have to hunt, get you a full turkey choke. Hunting in the evening is going to be tough. Very few bireds gobble in the evening. Find out were they roost and setup close to their roost trees and maybe you'll get a shot.

RE: questions from a novice
..If i understand right,it has no screw-in-choke is this right???
myself i would not recomend it,unless your good a judgeing yardage if i wanted to keep the barrel,i would have a choke installed and backbored while they are at it...:eek: |
RE: questions from a novice
you are correct about the barrel. Can a gunsmith install a screw-in choke system. If so how long does it take/cost? Thanks for your help. If it will work I'd rather do that than buy a new gun.
Thanks! |
RE: questions from a novice
Yes, the barrel can be tapped and a choke inserted. It cost me about $70.00 to get it done including the choke and it took about 2 weeks, but I had it done in early February.
On the other hand, the Imp cyl that came stock on my ithaca killed a bunch of birds before I found a second-hand barrel in a pawn shop and had it cut and tapped. Just be patient and make sure they're inside 30 yards. |
