How close have you been to a wild turkey?
How close have you been to a wild turkey?
For me I have four I remember more than the others. Two hens, Two Jakes and one Gobbler. 1. Had a hen fly out of tree right in front of my boots while sitting on the ground and she walked around until she pulled on my tips of my boot string hitting her hed on my barrel of the shotgun resting in the v of my two boots. 2. Second hen keeps trying to see my eyes and then a bug must have went in my barrel and got her attention and she stuck her beak right in the barrel. 3. While sitting in a creek bed below the level of the bank a friend of mine watched two jakes come right to the edge of the creek bank just above my head and the leafs on the edge falling onto my head. I could see my friend smile as he watched. 4. The latest while filming this gobbler he walked right next too me and stretched his wings and hit me on the shoulder. Now none of this is april fools and all true events only the names have change to protect the innocent. By the way enjoy the last photo. ![]() |

RE: How close have you been to a wild turkey?
Last year I had a longbeard pitch out of his roost and land behind me. i called one time and he gobbled and came into my set up on my off hand side. He stopped right next to me, approx2 feet. He stood therefor a few minutes and gobbled about 10 times. Let me tell you what I was all I could do to keep from laughing out loud. I watched him out of the corner of my ey for about 5 minutes. He eventually figured somethin was up and turned to leave. I never heard him again.
Talk about a rush. A longbeard at two feet gobbling his head off. first time he gobbled I though I was going to loose it. That will definetly get your heart going. |

Horntagger
I was hunting up in morgan county(missouri) about 10 years ago. I spotted 2 toms with 8 hens strutting out in a field. I stalked up the ridge on the back side of the field. When I got within 60 yards of the field I had to bellycrawl the last 40 yards. The group had moved to my side of the field. I got to within 10 yards of the field and a hen was crossing the fence. I was laying face down on the ground not moving a inch. The hen walked right over my back. She never knew I was there. She started heading down the ridge, The toms were 30 yards from the treeline. I called the toms right up and shot the biggest one. |

The tom I shot with my bow last year almost touched my blind as he strutted by. I shot him at about 4 yards as he came around the front.

RE: How close have you been to a wild turkey?
While I setup at a tree I had a hen come right straight to my boots before she stopped. She would scratch take a couple of steps and scratch again until she got to my boots then decided she should changed direction or run into me and the tree. I watched her walk off feeding. I also had a jake with a little stub of a beard walk up to me in a rainstorm checking me out. I could have bopped him in the head with the barrel of the gun. I don’t know why or what he thought I was but I was thinking to myself curiosity killed the cat and he won’t be around long doing that.

RE: How close have you been to a wild turkey?
I've actually touched many toms, as I picked them up after I shot them!!!
:D:D:D Hee-hee. Sorry about that. Actually, the closest I've been was one afternoon/evening when I was scouting, without camo mask, etc. (a lesson to be learned here, all), walking down a trail when I heard leaf scratching in the woods ahead. I sat down on the edge of the trail, but also kind of "in" the trail and here comes an entire flock of hens and toms on their way to roost. I froze, tried to not blink or move my eyes. A tom walked up to about 12 inches from me, looked at me, alarm putted and turned and flew off. The other birds didn't panic, but they all flew into roost trees, then re-roosted to other trees a 100 yards off. My answer, then, is about a foot, and my lesson for all is wear camo and carry a camo facemask and hat when scouting, so you don't blow the next day's hunt over the "roosted but not yet roasted gobbler"!!! |
RE: How close have you been to a wild turkey?
3 ft. last year a hen intercepted the tom she came in from my back side & walked right past me.........................................I hope she got hit by a truck, ate by a coyote or died of something. She foiled my plans all last year, she was so raspy it almost sounded unnatural. If the property owner would've let me hunt there in the fall........................I would have shot her. I know my therapist says that in about 15 years I will be able to laugh about this....................................yeah whatever.

RE: How close have you been to a wild turkey?
Back before I bought a ground blind, I used some camo netting to hide behind. Two years ago, I was setup and a hen decided to see what was behind that net. She stood there looking over the net at me at maybe 3 feet from my face. I waited as long as I could without blinking, but when I finally did, she decided that she had somewhere else to be.lol Another time, I was deer hunting and had to work the night before. I was down in the limbs of a tree that had fell and couldn't stay awake anymore and fell asleep. Something startled me and I jumped up. There were two hens right behind me and when they took flight, one of their wings actually hit my hat. It scared the hell out of me and I was so shook up, I just packed up and went home.

RE: How close have you been to a wild turkey?
Last year while cutting and running, I made a call but wasn't really paying attention when my buddy started cussing about another hunter being in the area and responding to my call with some awful yelps and clucks. It donned on me that no self respecting hunter would call that poorly. So I told him get down because that's got to be hen. Well we laid face sown in the road as the hen walked about 4 feet from my head, catching my eyes following her she putted and ran off.
Man I thought that was close until I read some of these posts:DSome of you guys may want to work on your cat like reflexes and try and grab one next time;)[8D]:D |
RE: How close have you been to a wild turkey?

RE: How close have you been to a wild turkey?
My first year turkey hunting, I didn't know what I was doing, so I built a blind a couple of weeks before the season expecting them to come to me. I even sat on a stool! Well, I got lucky and put it where a bunch of hens (with a BIG tom) came feeding through. (It sure couldn't have been my calling!) I moved EXTREMELY slowly and managed to put the slate down and pick up my shotgun that I had leaning up against a tree. (I told you I didn't know what I was doing!) By the time I had it on the tom, the boss hen had fed right in front of my blind. When I pulled the trigger, she was BEHIND the muzzle! I had to watch my step comming out of the blind -- she left a mess getting out of there!
That was about 25 years ago and I haven't been quite that close to one since. |
RE: How close have you been to a wild turkey?
I've had two jakes about 3 feet from me once clucking looking for me...

RE: How close have you been to a wild turkey?
you fella's wanna talk about close..here is one for ya.Last year i was hunting in brown co, ohio and put some toms to bed one evening, and was planning on getting there an hour before dark and getting as close as possible low crawling to the tree they roosted in using my new guille suit i constructed myself, you know being a former marine and all i had to have one. So i got there 0 dark thirty, and low crawled about 20 yds from the tree they was in and just waited, about a few minutes before light i started some soft tree yelps and all the birds was talking and gobbling. All of a sudden i start hearing them fly down, the plan was to lay prone and try to get a shot at one of the toms. About that time, a turkey flies down and lands RIGHT ON MY BACK!!!!! Boy i aint never hollered so loud, you would of thought someone was torturing me,lmao. Needless to say my plan didnt work, im gonna try it again this year just not as close and not prone.
