Winchester 1300 Questions?????
 

OK heres one that really bothers me!!! My wife bought a Win. 1300 Compact 12ga this last fall. Great gun so far...until we tried to pattern it. We havne purchased an aftermarket shoke yet for it so we've bin using the full tube that comes with it. I problem is when shooting the 2 3/4 fed turkey loads thru it, after you pull the trigger the forearm shoots back and ejects the shell like an auto or something!! This truly bothers me from a safety standpoint. The guns manual says its capable of shooting up to 3" Magnum loads, so i think there may be a malfunction here? Anyones thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.....

JD, this is not a safety issue. The 1300 does this due to the recoil and your hand on the forearm. If you will shot it with the gun on a sand bag and hold it with your hand on the top, this will not happen. Most people consider this a plus as it allows for a fast follow up shot. I shoot 3" magums and after you get used to it, I think you will like the ability to shoot a second shot fast. Don

DoninVa is right on the money. I have two 1300s' and they both do the same thing as you describe. In time you'll love it. I also have one of winchesters old model 1200s' that was given to me back in the 60s' and it does the same thing.

I had a 1300 a few years back and NEVER had it do this! I've shot a pump all my life, so being unfamiliar with a pump doesn't factor into it.

Is she pulling back on the forestock when pulling the trigger? The action will release when the trigger releases and such an action may occur then. BUT if the forestock is sliding back WITHOUT input from the shooter, then in my opinion, you have a real safety issue.

Ok to clarify i did try shooting it with my hand gripping the front of the magazine tube, with the same results. It doesnt do it shooting just light trap loads so my concern is the bolt isnt locking properly. I dunno either i guess an email to Winchester is in order. Thanx for all your help ya'll!!!

As I stated, I own two of them, it's not a safety problem. It's designed to do this for ease of pumping the next round in.

I also own a 1300 Black Shadow and mine does the exact thing your described. If you read some more literature on the 1300 you will find the gun is designed to do this for a quick follow up shot. It is almost like a cross between a semi-auto and a pump. If I remember the information I found that describes this dealt with the rotary bolt feature. This is perfectly normal with this gun. I bought an Undertaker choke and am shooting 3" Winchester supreme's Double XX's #6's and getting 50+ pellets in the head kill zone at 30 yards. It did a great job last year on the PA bird I killed.

I've never used a 1300, but I do believe this is why they call it a "speed pump" and if I understand it correctly it ejects the shell by inertia which is similar to the benelli. Look it up on the winchester web site it tells all about it. Seems to me if you put a spring behind the bolt you'd have an auto!!!

I've owned my 1300 since 1992, and YES, the gun's action "is designed to operate like that"!! That's why it's called the "speed-pump"!! I agree, while it's different than any other pump gun, one you get use to the way it works, it's a fast shucking gun for sure!!!;)
