RE: How many of you make your own calls?
I’ve tried making my own mouth calls without much success I either stretched them too tight or too loose. I have made some peg box calls for friends and myself that have helped to kill some nice birds. You don’t see anyone out there selling them at the huntin stores or at any of the conventions and I don’t know why. The calls I've made really sound great if you use the right wood.

I make my own mouth calls using the [Call "Purr"fect Game Calls kit]. I get about half of the ones I make that sound like I want them to. Called in 5 toms in 3 states last year that met their demise. My Dad makes a turtle shell call that uses cedar for the surface with a cedar peg for the striker. It makes a very good purr and cluck and an OK yelp.

I make all of my Slate, glass, and alum calls. I tune them the way i like em and get a different sound than most hunters use. It helps when hunting public land...

I have been playing around with making my own calls for the last couple of years. I've made wingbone calls, scratchbox calls either all wood or slate top, turtle shell calls with slate strikeboards, and one-sided box calls. Some sond great -- some OK (and some just plain stink, but they look good). Mostly I give them as gifts to friends that I want to get into turkey hunting.
Its something to do -- Keeps me off the streets.
