Nitro Shells

has anyone used Nitro shells? are they worth the money? I was thinking of trying the 3" 2-1/4oz. load they have with # 6 shot, anyone use them?

RE: Nitro Shells

I use them. As of now, I can only speak of their 10 GA loads. However, I've just ordered some of the 3inch 2.25 ounce loads for my wife's 870 Express and hope to pattern them in the next couple of weeks.

As far as the 10 GA, the worst loads that I patterned put more that DOUBLE the pellets into the target. My best patterning load more than tripled the pellets of the factory load. Like shooting 3 factory loads at once. WELL worth every single penny.

I have not tried them, but IMO not worth the hefty tag that comes with them. I mean, how dead is dead and factory ammo been killing birds a long time before ole Nitro Mo Money Ray came on the scene. I know, i know, alot of you guys take personal pride in kiling a bird with a $5 shell. However, in truth, those unbelievable patterns can be attributed simply to the 7&1/2 filler shot. For that matter take yourself a 3" #8 out of a XX or XXX Full choke and see how dense your pattern is. Like i said...inside 40yds. how dead is dead??

I agree with zzvedder, what good are #7.5 shot for turkeys? At any range those little pellets will penitrate there are more than enough larger shot to do the job any most loads you'd consider for turkeys. And any loading that is a triplex or duplex loading is limited to shorter range than many think for this reason. I'm loading some duplex loads useing 1/2 oz. of #4 shot over 1 1/8 oz. of #5 shot to try. Silly in a way as the load will be limited to the range that #5 shot will penitrate at.

RE: Nitro Shells

You are correct, in my opinion, that 7.5 shot is not worth much past 40 yards. Nitro says they act as a buffer that holds the larger shot in a tighter pattern. But I still will not use the loads with 7.5 shot.

I patterned some 10 GA loads with #4 shot and #5 shot. The best shooting load was a 3 ounce load of nickel plated #4 shot that averaged 135 plus pellets in a 10 inch circle. That was at 50 yards. The factory loads of #5 shot at that same range put less than 40 pellets in the 10 inch circle. Yes, that's nearly 100 pellets less. Even the worst of the Nitros put 75 plus pellets in the circle. If you do the math, you will find the Nitro shells are actually CHEAPER!!! I pay less than $3 per shell from Nitro or I could pay $1 each for 3 factory shells. The limit is 5 gobblers in Alabama so if I kill my limit I will have spent less than $15 on shells AND have the knowledge that I can easily bring down a bird at 50 yards with one shot.
