Making your Own Friction Calls

This is for you fellas that have made your own Friction calls.

I ordered some materials from Customsawing and made me a Glass over Glass call, with a walnut Pot- It's a beautifull call but sounds like S#@$.[:@]
I followed the instructions but was'nt pleased with the sound at all-
It's very monatone with no character what so ever
I'm gonna try another one- Walnut pot , Glass over slate-
Got any tips to improve the sound?

Sounding boards have alot to do with the sound of the tone. Glass over glass is both hrad surfaces, I would think if you use a different material you will hear a difference...BT

VP---I made the same call using supplies from Customsawing---glass over glass. Maybe be the only difference is that I had some customized 3" decals made for the smaller glass. I made 4 as gifts and picked the worst job as mine (it still looks OK).

I am excited about the way mine sounds. What kind of striker did you use? Mine sounds real good using both the Wood Wise Mystic Styk and a Bloggett striker. I tried making my own striker with the CustomSawing acrylic but wasn't too fond of it.

I know it's not the strikers, cause I've tried it with every striker I own,Rosewood, Carbon, hickory, etc and the tone is just so blaugh! No rollover at all,

BT, do you think the Glass over slate will create a better tone or is it the way I'm making them?

VP , you should here a difference in the slate as a board, you may want to try the Slate over Glass if you can. I've taken a thin pc of butternut and used that as well. Plexy/plastic makes a good sound board aswell. Maybe give it a test run before you glue down your pc's. This will give you a ruff idea as to what kind of tone you may get...BT
