First Morning of Scouting

I finally made it to the Woods this morning to do a little scouting, Man was it wet, but a gorgeous morning. No wind and calm as could be.
I went into the area where I've taken several Birds, sat down and opened up my coffee bottle, poured a little hot brew. I had just about finished my first cup about 5 minutes before daylight when a Bird Gobbled about 60 yds in front of me on the hill, I shot "HOT" Coffee outa both nostrils! Totally caught me off gaurd, I wasnt expecting one to be quite that close. Anyway, I sat there motionless waiting for the flydown and listening to several hens about 30 yds to his left when another bird about 100yds away and to my left started lighting the woods up, It was great! The birds in front of me started flying down and feeding towards a cut over, with the Tom gobblin his head off. I got up and moved towards the cut-over and slipped up to the edge and watched two Toms strutting their stuff for about 15 minutes undisturbed, it really got the heart to pumping. The hens fed off to the other side of the cutover with the two toms in hot pursuit, after they were out of site, I went over to one of the wind rows and started making me a little ground blind and just about got it finished when I heard some clucking behind the wind row, I looked over and there was a Jake running around in circles trying to figure out what kinda critter was making all the movement behind all of the limbs- He was only about 30 yds from me and acting all goofy turning his head left and right, it was funny as hell.. He moved off and I finished the ground blind, I'll be sitting there with my 11 yr old and his new Rem 870 on the Youth hunt on Mar 20.. I'm gonna take the video camera and Video the whole hunt, He wants to do all of the calling so I just get to sit their and watch and hopefully cry after it's all over with-

I'm Pumped!

Jalvja, It never dawned on me to enter him in the contest!

I'm sure he would want to, but if Pat put em on another Team, I dont know if I could deal with all of the smack talking he would be doing 24/7..

I think he's worse then me![8D]

RE: First Morning of Scouting

I have scouted a couple of mornings down here in the lowcountry of SC. Birds just aren't ready yet. My good friend just came back from an opening week trip for Osceolas in Flordia and said they aren't ready yet either. It was below freezing here this time last week, so with this warmer weather I am hoping they fire up before the opener on the 15th.

Now Pat, I would do no such thing to my first Born!

And Jalvja- I can see now that I'm gonna have to send Bob up their to PA with some of my special 3.5" Primer Loads and do the ole shell switch on ya- Or better yet, I could UPS him my little Jimbo Doll... He would have loads of fun with it.

Team 2???

Pat_Ely 03-13-2004 07:57 PM

RE: First Morning of Scouting

Yes Vance, I hooked ya up[8D] I just hope the turk you shoot at likes confetti.......lol

VP 03-14-2004 06:16 AM

RE: First Morning of Scouting

The Confetti thing reminds me of something,

In 1991 or 92, me and my Dad got on this kick of loading our very own Super Duper Hot Turkey loads- We loaded probably 40-50 of these Hot loads prior to the upcoming season and Test fired them for a week with Great results-
The second morning of the season, we had this Bird Gobblin and strutting at about 70-80 yds in the broad open- Called to this bird for a solid thirty minutes with him coming no closer- I decided to slip back away from our setup to make him think the hen was moving away in hopes of pulling him in to my Dad for the shot-
Well, it worked the bird moved within gun range to say the least- He came in at 27 steps before realizing his mistake when my dad squezed the trigger to hear a funny "POOOMP" and watch his BB's run out the end of his barrel to about 10 yds and fall to the ground- From my position, it was hillarious to say the least,
First thing I said after wipeing the tears from my eyes was " Thats the best pattern I've ever seen"!
That was the luckiest turk , I've ever encountered , We made it back to the truck and headed straight to Walmart to pick up some turkey loads and I never stuck anything in my gun other then factory loads again.

Bobgobble2 03-14-2004 06:56 AM

RE: First Morning of Scouting

:DLMAO!!!Vance I load all my stuff and "knock on wood"have had nothin but great success doing it.I've changed the recipe for my 10 over the years a few times but started loading them way back yonder because I was so displeased with the modern loads for my 10 back then. Now its part of my preseason ritual to load my own turkey thumpers in my own little hunting room of which my wife calls hers husbands own little "sanctuary"!She's right!!!!:)

VP 03-14-2004 12:34 PM

RE: First Morning of Scouting

Well Bob, I'm gonna load you up a Big Ole batch of them special Super Duper Magnum Express Cross Threaded double Hinged Turkey loads to take up to PA witcha in case ole Jalvja tries some of that funny business, you can slip em in his vest and he wont know any difference until he pulls the trigger on that bent Barrell meat missle of his. It'll be to late then![8D][8D]

Pat_Ely 03-15-2004 10:45 AM

Pat_Ely 03-15-2004 05:22 PM

RE: First Morning of Scouting

Oooh sure it's always my fault...My brother In Law starts hunting turks and I get blamed.....He buys a new shotgun and again I get blamed. [8D][8D] Jalvja 's barrels get bent and I get blamed Guess i'm getting used to it by now.

jalvja 03-15-2004 05:45 PM

:D Well Pat,I gotta blame someone LOL;)

VP 03-15-2004 06:02 PM

RE: First Morning of Scouting

Oh yea Jalvja- The look was definately "The Money Shot"!

He paused for just a moment I guess to gather his thoughts and then said,
"What the heck was that"?

I couldnt stop laughing- He didnt find it ammussing to say the least, he was shaking his head all the way back to the truck and muttering stuff under his breath.
