Question??

Is it possible to call in turkeys with just one or 2 calls tops. If you could only have one type of call ex. slate, friction, diaphram could you mimic different calls with just one type. The reason I ask is, I am new to turkey hunting and don't have money to buy this one and this one and etc. so if I could get away with only purchasing one or 2 of these it would be great.

RE: Question??

Absolutely!! I only had one call my very first year hunting. It was a push button box call designed to fit under the barrel of the gun. I still have it and use it at times. I got turkeys to respond and I had NO CLUE what I was doing! Just kept pushing the button making yelps.

I would recommend getting a box call and/or something like the Lohman pump action yelper (next on my list of calls to get). These calls require little in the way of practice to become proficient enough with.

Slate calls are the next easiest. However, I have come across some that were tricky to use. I personally don't like them as much but tons of people love em. I still buy em and try them out while hunting but almost always go back to the box and mouth calls.

Next you could get some mouth calls. Most of them sound excellent but they require more practice. Plus, some people have a sensitive gag reflex which can make using mouth calls uncomfortable. You can buy them in sets that include instructional videos which helps if you've never used them before. The best thing about the mouth calls is the fact that you can remain still and hands free while using them. This is why they are preferred by many turkey hunters.

RE: Question??

One or two calls is all that you need to take turkeys with.I think most of us just keep buying calls because we just can't help it.Turkey hunting is an addicting sport and turkey calls are just like a drug to us.
Personaly I thought the pump action yelper was a waste of money.

RE: Question??

1- A good boxcall (Lynch "Foolproof")
2- A good slate (Too many to choose from)

in that order

Be sure to say goodbye to your family!
and welcome aboard.

RE: Question??

YES you can, mainly I use a little cedar box I have had for 35 years first call I ever got.
I have two more box calls and a couple slates, one glass, three push pull.and a fist full of mouth diaphrams,O ya three wingbones.
the little cedar box is the one I always go back to.
it is the one I have taken the most birds with.
confidents is the whole thing.

RE: Question??

You'll take more turkey with one call that you can run well than you will with a whole vest full of calls you run not so well.

RE: Question??

I would suggest the triple threat by Quaker Boy Game Calls. It is a pot style call that is easy to use. You get three surfaces so you can make three distinct sounds from one call. www.quakerboygamecalls.com

RE: Question??

I would buy a Lynch Box call #102. Mine has served me well for 37 years and still going.

RE: Question??

Yes, box call first. I use an HS Strutt Silent Stalker. Your second call could be a slate. Your third could be another box that calls higher or more raspy than your first. After a while you might start looking at using mouth calls but I never did. Somewhere in between those calls I would think about getting a locator call too, either an owl hooter or a crow call to get those toms to shock gobble on the roost. I use an owl hooter. Slamming your car/truck door in the morning works great too if your close enough!!!!

RE: Question??

Thanks for everyone's advice. I am glad that I don't HAVE to buy all the different calls on the market. I will look into buying a box call first and maybe a slate. I will also purchase an instrucional video that can help me learn faster.
