This will be my 12th year in the spring turkey woods. I do regret not taking up turkey hunting sooner though. My first spring of hunting back in 1993, I took a 24 lb. and 23 lb. MO Eastern gobblers. I have been hopelessly hooked on this fine sport ever since!:):D

RE: how many years

This will be my second year, took two birds last year. The first day out I heard a bunch of gobbling and then I saw my friend call in a turkey and watched him travel 80 yards to his setup. I remember hitting my call and watching him gobble. He shot the bird and I was hopessly hooked. First bird weighed 21 lbs and had a 11 7/8 beard and 7/8" spurs. Second bird was a double beard with beards at 9 3/4" and 6 1/4" and 1 1/4" spurs. Both taken in Georgia on my hunt club. Can't get enough turkey hunting, the gobbling drives me crazy.

RE: how many years

I've spent 21 glorious springs in the turkey woods. In those years I've taken about 109 hunting trips to 33 different states, and usually hunt about 65-70 days per year in 8-10 states. Killed my first bird back in '83 (1st year) during an intense thunderstorm, and wrote a story about it for Outdoor Life that was published in Oct of '87.

RE: how many years

this year will be year number 6....my first bird was last year.....i had chances at turkeys every year.....but never took a shot....always had an excuse...thought it was too far..or to thick or something.....but in reality i now know a 12ga will do alot more then i thought...but i was young and learning......i dont regret not taking shots...i could wounded or missed them birds so im glad i didnt.....last spring i went hunting the second day myself...dad worked and i was finally 16 adn could hunt myself...it was my first time hunting alone...i went behind the house to where i scouted birds for a long time all by myself....8am i was tagging my first turkey...9 inch beard and 3/4 inch spurs....not huge but i think its a very respectable first turkey...and i did it all myself..from scouting to the hunt and the calling......noone helped me.....then i got my second this fall......a hen......all alone again....i was small game hunting mainly pheasants but looking for turkeys as well....she flushed high in the tree tops and i shot..first shot was a ligh 1 1.8th ounce load...second was a steel 2 3/4 inch mag.....she dropped out of the sky.....this year i just want to do some calling......hopefully call dad in a bird.....thats the funnest part......

I have been chasing turkeys now for 10 years now. I went 4 years before getting one, but when I did I was hooked. My biggest bird to date is 21lbs 11" beard 1-1/4" spurs taken in SE Ohio.

Anyways, I'm gonna go cry now because I feel really old...

Started in 78 and have taken at least 1 bird every year. Hunted in blue jeans and a green flannel shirt the first few years. Called the first bird in with a home made ink pen call. Single shot Winchester shot gun with 23/4" game loads. Boy how the times have changed.

RE: how many years

Started back in the late 70's as well, but had two hunters stalk me one fall morning, so I gave up turkey hunting for almost 8 years becasue of that!! It took a good friend of mine to get me back into turkey hunting again, and to this day I'm still very leary of Fall turkey hunting, that's why I prefer the spring season much more!!
I have since started taking Mature gobblers only since 1992!!
;);)

22 years and ive killed 29 birds.

RE: how many years

I started going out with my dad when I was 9 years old.....that first year, I didn't get to shoot one, but I sat beside dad as he worked one in....it just didn't come in there close enough for that 410 I was useing at the time....but that was the hunt that hooked me...I took my first bird at 15...it was a 20lb 3oz gobbler that had a 10" beard and 1" spurs.....since then, I have good hunts and have had some not so good.....but I wouldn't trade a minute in the spring woods for a week in deer season....so, after doing the math, I've in the spring wood for this will be my 20th.

RE: how many years

2 years. I called in a hen on my first hunt and got to watch her at 5 steps. Called in two jakes on my second hunt and killed one. Called in two longbeards on my third hunt and killed one (was my second season then-one bird limit here) and took a buddy out on my fourth hunt and called up two longbeards and he took one. I have never taken or seen a turkey taken at a range over 15 yards.
Maybe I'm some sort of phenom!!!;):D;)
This April will be season #3. Lord I hope my beginners luck keeps up!
