Making a box call?

I've got some walnut planks (for gunstocks) and thought about trying to make a box call. Will walnut make a good box? Also, what type wood will work good for a paddle? I'm not trying to start my own business or anything, just think it would be cool to make my own call and use it. Thanks in advance for any help given.:D

Walnut is a great sounding wood for Calls, I know the Walnut and Cherry Combo in Strikers are a good match ,, so maybe a base with Walnut and the lid done in Cherry or Walnut and Ash...BT

RE: Making a box call?

I've been told that a good raspy box call can be made from yellow willow with a black walnut paddle. I too want to make my own box call and use it for many years. I don't want to go into business, but I think it would be great to take a turkey using something I designed and built. I look forward to making one this year and using it in the field.

Gobbling Buck,
I bought some stuff from Custom Sawing and made some pot & striker calls. It was fun and I plan to buy some wood for a box call next.
Pretty cool stuff on their web page (www.customsawing.com).:D
You can purchase things mostly machined, or choose to buy rough pieces of wood. Check them out, great customer service.:)
