Friction Call - General Wear & Tear
 

Was just wondering how long do friction calls last. Is there a X amount of years they can be used before the surface looses grip to make anymore sounds?

Rav. I would think for a life time , but if your slates are starting to Bowl then take off some weight when you sand them :D ...BT

Rofl BT!!!Rav obviously everything wears over time accompanied also by just how much you use it.I little tip here to help slow down wear and tear on your friction calls is invest in a case.Things like dirt,water,dampness,and even sunlight,will over time help in breaking a call down.Here's a look at a pouch/case for a slate call,hope it helps ...Bob

Using a special grade of sandpaper also help? i use a very high grade to ruff up my calls is that the correct one to use?

Bo thanks for the link on that pouch thats a interesting tool to use and your right dirt and such do take a toll on the calls. I place them in a ziplock bag before they go into my vest but i might just invest in a slate pouch......hopefully my belt can hold all the weight when i attach them all lol :D

If your calls have a true slate surface (not glass, aluminum, crystal, etc.) you shouldn't be using anything but Scotch-Brite on them. You don't want to use sandpaper on slates, however the paper is fine for the other surfaces. Just don't use very coarse paper on aluminum, as it can take too much off and affect the sound.
