fsh , thats is a great story , and pics that followed. I couldn't blame your wife at all after watching that performance. As I know this happens as I had a hen years ago pull much of the same thing but she didn't want to fight she wanted something else. I videoed the whole thing with another fello watching it. when we got up and started to walk away she followed us about 30 yards then stood and gave the sadest hen yelps ever hear to man kind.
Great pic's there bud...BT

Thanks for the comments guys. The adventure was one the wife and I will always remember, it was quite an adrenaline rush... About ~8 years earlier we both watched a pre-season, long drag-out gobbler fight with neck twisting, snood biting, and a lot of violent wing beating. I was thinking at this time that I was getting into a mess, daring a gobbler to open me up with his spurs, and I was beginning to wonder how I was going to get out of it. Believe me, I thought about grabbing the bird by the neck, wrestling him down, and taking him home to let him go on my farm; but no "takes" on Sunday, and he did have a mean set of spurs... I was kind of glad he alarmed putted and left when my wife stood up.

well i have yet to shoot a turkey, but i have had some good experiences. here are two of my stories

3years ago when i was 12, me and pa went out. it was his week and he hadnt shot a turkey yet. so i had our slate call and we got settled on a hay field. as daylight broke we heard the gobblers in the woods across the fields. well then they all started flying off the roast. when they stepped onto the field they were prolly o 90 yds away. we could see there were 3 main toms and a few hens and jakes. we had two hen decoys set out 30 yds in front of us. the toms moved in as i called. they got to about 70 yds and started fighting and spitting and the whole show. they kept inchin closer and closer until they got to about 50yds when 16 deer came zipping out of the hardwoods to our right, right at us. this spooked the turkeys, and us and somehow the deer walked right passed us. the toms were after the deer interuption about 60 yds away and once again sneakin to us. they got to 45 yds and would not come any closer. we waited 20 minutes but they would just keep going back and forth. finally i called just a lil more and they came to 40 yds and pa shot and down the tom went. 21# 2 3/4 spurs 10 1/4 beard. i liked this becaus i called in dads first bird.

the second story happened last year when i had my friend over to do some practice hunting. so he came over on a friday night and we located some birds. when we got up in the morning we used the locater and the whole dawn erupted with a full bluntal nugity style of turkeys all over. so we decided which group sounded the closest. we got to the same place where my dad had shot his turkey. and theyre were two toms fightin for a lone hen. they took off because of our carelessness. we snuck around to a knoll in the middle of a deep thick swamp and we got settled there. we could hear two hens calling for dominance and the tom was coming up from the swamp right to us. neither of us had tags so we watched as a fox made him fly right over the top of our heads and scared the u know what out of us. that was a fun hunt.

i could write a book...like all of you probally could....thats why i love turkey hunting....but the one that stands out is last year...second day..it was a monday...dad had to work so i decided since i was 16 and could hunt alone i would...i scouted these birds behind my house since i moved here a few years ago....sun comes up....its a beautiful spring morning..never seen a spring morning like that one.....well my birds haave 2 roost sights.....i never knew that......i walked around all morning trying to strike a gobble.....no luck.....so i can back to the spot i start...its a logging road type deal..dont know if its just a quad trail or if they did log it at one time.....but i knew birds feed down that trail and figured maybe its a strutting zone...so i set up and called with 2 calls talking to eachother off and on not very aggresivly at all...just calling back and forth then silence for a while.....well out of nowhere i heard a gobble after sitting there for 2 hours i think....it was close too....i knew he came over 400yards away(forgot to mention i heard a few off the roost over 400yds away across a creek and down and up STEEP hillside.......so i didnt want to go down there and spook them away....impossible to get there and not get busted....)well the bird was only about 100yds out and i knew he was going to come after he went all that way....i grabbed my call and gave him a few yelps....he double gobble...closer!!! i called one more time really excitedly and he went nuts....it was great.....i got my gun up and was ready.....a few seconds later he popped up over the hillside....i let him walk across infront of me and made a 20yard shot....bagged my first turkey ever....and dad never scouted it or anything....i did it ALL on my own...and my first long beard!!! 9 inch beard 3/4 inch spurs....not huge but heck......its my first turkey....thats a day ill never forget!!!
