Turkey season is finally arriving up here!

Turkey season is opening up!! Yessah! Tomorrow is youth day here and Monday is the start of our season! It has been a long wait for this to get here. It almost seams like it gets to be a longer waiting period each year with all the southern states already hunting for them! Hopefully I will get a chance at one on Monday..

Arrowmaster 04-26-2019 06:15 PM

good luck Phil :)

Bocajnala 04-26-2019 07:17 PM

Bought my Ohio tags today.

Monday is my opener.

Good luck. I won't be out until Tuesday probably.

Thanks guys I am hopeful that I can get a bow shot at one in the morning. One will wander threw the back field every once and a while..

GOOD OLE BOY 04-28-2019 01:52 PM

Good luck.

Phil from Maine 04-29-2019 12:40 AM

This morning is opening day and I will be at it trying to get a long beard to show itself. I am planning on hunting in the back field for a while this morning. Hopefully one of those big birds will still be around..

Bocajnala 04-29-2019 12:58 AM

I can hunt from 9-11 this morning.

Then daylight till 930 tomorrow morning.

Hoping for some good luck in Ohio!

Good luck Jake..

I had four deer come out by me while I was setting in my blind. One of which came in close and started stomping and blowing at me. Then they all trotted off. A short time later that big Tom came by me. He strutted and gobbled up a storm but wouldn’t come in for a bow shot. Then two hens came along and he chased them out of the field. So I changed my decoy set up and hoping to see him again. He was seen yesterday going threw the field around 5 ish . So hopefully he will be back and give me a bow shot. I did see a hen go running back down the field. So he shouldn’t be to far away. No matter it’s been a great morning to be out here..

Bocajnala 04-29-2019 07:30 AM

Saw two deer, no turkey seen or heard.

Called in a couple geese though.... Maybe I'm doing it wrong

Took the wife's 20 gauge Mossberg out this morning. So far all it's been used for is squirrel

Good luck, guys!

The season opens here in NY on Wed, 5/1 and goes through 5/31. Half hour before sunrise to noon.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast is calling for rain showers each day this week. Have you guys had successful hunts in the rain? (This is my first time turkey hunting, btw)

Phil from Maine 04-30-2019 04:34 PM

You can still get them in a rain. They are less vocal from what I have found. But I have gotten a few on rainy days. Good luck to you.

I am seeing them and they are not coming in on my decoys at all right now. Yesterday while sitting in my blind I watched one walk up the road. He gobbled like crazy and strutted all over it. I don’t own where he was and vegans do. But he wouldn’t come in for a bow shot. Two hens came along and he chased them up across the field. Last evening I gave up and went in to eat. The darn bird walked right by our kitchen window. Today I had to work so I set for him this evening. Yessah he walked right down the road and ignored my decoys again. I have had hens walk right beside my blind but not the toms. I had a relative send me a picture of two toms out back this morning go figure. I will keep at him and maybe just use the hen decoys. I don’t know why he avoids them.

blsjds 05-01-2019 09:48 AM

Thanks Phil!

I will be hunting in the fields behind my house, so I've been watching their movement when I can, and have definitely noticed less activity the last 10 days. Hopefully the decoys I put out will spark some interest.

Of course, two Toms crossed the road in front of my truck on the way home from work yesterday, about a mile from my house ha ha.

Phil from Maine 05-01-2019 03:31 PM

Well I fired at a big bird with my bow this evening. I cut him off and he was around 15 yards from me. He dodged the arrow somehow. I thought for sure that I would of had him. But no deal.. Now I am wondering if he will come back again? I am hoping so or another one will come take his place..

Phil from Maine 05-01-2019 03:49 PM

Once the flock breaks up the activity becomes less. That’s exactly what happens here every year. Two weeks ago there was seven big toms out back. Now there is one or two showing up. Maybe after this evening there will be none going threw? I don’t really know what to say about my missing that one this evening. But the birds will still come out in the rain..

blsjds 05-02-2019 05:27 PM

Damn that sucks, but still exciting that you were close! I'll be heading out Saturday morning, although if it's not pouring tomorrow am and I'm up, I might give it a shot.

That's interesting - I didn't know that the flock eventually breaks up, but it makes sense because we're now seeing some solo hens coming through, and the occasional solo Tom.

Bocajnala 05-02-2019 07:32 PM

For us, the turkeys flock up through the winter around food. It's not uncommon to see a flock with over a hundred birds in it.

But once the weather breaks and food is available they all break up.

No luck this weekend, but we were able to get a LOT of gobbling in response to our calls. We tried to be as judicial as possible with calling, but just couldn't coax them over to where we were.

They roost across the street from my property and up until a few weeks ago, very frequently came down into the field behind my house. I don't think the decoys were in their line of sight, so I'll try a different location / set up next weekend.

Timbrhuntr 05-06-2019 05:28 PM

Good luck figuring it out ! On Thursday last week I had a tom come to the edge of the woods strutt and gobble and just look at my set up then turn and walk off. Today same set up and had 5 different hens come in and peck at my breeder hen but not one tom !! Usually the toms come to investigate and the hens couldn't care less.

Phil from Maine 05-06-2019 06:04 PM

One of the two year olds was shot on the next street over and I have seen any of them out back anymore. But I was still hearing gobbles early in the morning. That has stopped now. I am thinking because they are all hened up now. I went and sent out for two of the DSD hen decoys to see if that will help when they get moving again. I figured that a couple of more hens would not hurt anything.. Good luck guys..

GOOD OLE BOY 05-09-2019 05:11 PM

Go get em.

Phil from Maine 05-16-2019 12:52 AM

Well I have been after them and still no luck. So I went to a different area and saw five nice long beards together. I tried calling them and they take off the other way go figure. I think that maybe those ones have already been hunted hard? I am not sure what’s going on with them. No matter where I try there is no gobbling going on right now. I still have until June first to get it done though.. Good luck everyone that is still out there hunting..

blsjds 05-16-2019 09:23 AM

Heading out this weekend for another shot at it, but definitely not seeing nearly as many birds recently. Good luck to you too!

I tried my luck again this morning and three birds came in silently. One was a long beard and one was a jake. The other one I couldn’t get a good look at as they spotted me first. All three ran together and when they started separating I fired at what I thought was the bigger Tom. I ended up shooting the jake instead.. While it wasn’t the bird that I wanted to get I am still happy with it. It has a different colored beard on him though.

blsjds 05-17-2019 07:15 AM

Awesome - congrats!!!

Phil from Maine 05-17-2019 01:30 PM

Thank you and good luck!

Nice going Phil glad you got one!!

Phil from Maine 05-17-2019 04:39 PM

Thank you Jake and I am hoping to get a bigger bird before our season ends..

Ridge Runner 05-17-2019 05:42 PM

that's what we call red rot, a fungus that grows in the beard, given time the beard will break off there.
RR

Phil from Maine 05-17-2019 05:58 PM

Okay RR that must be what they mean by beard rot? That fungus will rotten that part of the beard and rotten it until it falls off. Thanks because I have never seen it myself.

Timbrhuntr 05-18-2019 06:24 AM

Congrats on getting one down now that the presuure is off the next one shoud fall right into your lap lol

As far as the beard I have shot several with that red/brown section about half way down and then black at the top and bottom where it seems to keep growing . I also shot one a couple years ago with 1 1/4" spurs and a beard about 3 inches long with a red tinge on the end so it had obviously finally broke off !

Phil from Maine 05-18-2019 01:32 PM

Thanks again as I have never seen it before and just thought it was some kind of freaky color change in it. The tagging station never had one come in looking like that either. So that is a very informative subject. I have heard on here a lot about beard rot but never really seen it or in its early stages. So thanks everyone. I am always trying to learn stuff from here..
