Turkey Hunting-Property prep
 

I deer hunt on 38.5 acres of a pine property, 10 acres of thick woods with a nice stream and small pond, that my grandfather owns. He’s told me whenever the pines are fully grown and the ground is covered with needles the turkeys flock to the area. However when the pines are growing again tall grass sweeps through the area and the turkeys disappear, I saw only one last year. I’ve only recently started hunting the property last fall. Would clrearing out all the tall grass with a bush hog bring the turkey back to the area allowing them to hangout under the growing pines? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

My experience with turkeys is that they roam, a lot. It may be worth a try to cut the grass and see what happens. But most of their movement, outside of mating season, is food and cover related.

Is there any type of grain, seed or something else I could put out as food. I heard one gobbler yesterday while hunting.

Mowing the grass will help. The dew in the tall grass wets their feathers so they tend to avoid tall grass until the sun dries the dew. A wet bird can't fly.

They supposedly like Chufa. I've tried to plant it with little success. They will eat bugs off of alfalfa and clover. Not necessarily a food plot item, but I've seen a hen eating seeded, dandelion heads one after another.

Are you spring or fall hunting? Each has their own techniques.
