Chokes
Just wondering what choke works best in the mossberg 835 ultimag. I'm using the Winchester long beard xr. Thanks!
|
I haven't shot the longbeards yet but the Winchester Supremes out of my .680 Kicks ported choke are freakin deadly. I'm gonna try some LB's but I am hearing a lot of hunters saying their too tight up close.
|
What choke do you have available for your Mossberg if you've already decided what shell you want to shoot? The only way to know is to pattern your gun and find out what it does at various distances BEFORE you go hunting. The shell you mentioned is a killer with a choke that will pattern it and the price is very reasonable compared to some of the other popular turkey loads.

Try a turkey choke from Mossberg. Most shotgun manufacturers make decent choke tubes that work well in their firearms.

I have patterns at 30yds look like they were shot at 20yds with an X2, ported, polished, cones lengthened and with glass. 3" LB XR 6's and a Wrights Tube. |
At 13 yards, an open choke would have taken the head off a turkey! I have a Mossberg 935, the extended turkey choke that came with the gun shoots a great pattern
|
At 13 yards the wad itself probably took it's head off, LOL!

Your more than likely right TG, I have found the wad in my testing over 20yds from the bench. I have had them punch a hole in the paper at 20yds. They look just like the Federal FlightStopper wads with the little "air brakes" on the back, But still carry how far. That's why I think they shoot so doggone tight as in addition to the polyresin they pour the shot into. I wish they made them in 2's, BB's in a non-tox and then lead 4 buck. They would be a smashing load for geese and coyotes!!!!!! |
I wish they made the XRs in 2 3/4", as I have to use their older turkey loads in my Model 1200 Winchester. I used the Benelli my buddy left up here two years ago when he flew back to FL the following Spring with 3" XRs and the pattern they had at 40 yards was unreal. He sold that shotgun to another friend of his last Spring that lives in upper MI and I gave the guy the 8 remaining shells in the box I had bought and told him he was good to go for 8 years with them!

I would recommend the Hevishot HEVI13 Turkey choke
for your Mossberg.....you might wanna try some Magnum Blend shells as well |
I got a JEBs in my 835 that is just awesome. I think its .670.

I could be mistaken but another turkey hunting forum was talking about Winchester coming out with the 2 3/4 in XR. It's being introduced along side the 20 gauge XR.

Hot dang, you are right! I just went into the Winchester website and looked under new products. Along with the 20 gauge XR they are now coming out with a 2 3/4" 12 gauge load of 1 1/4 oz #5s at 1300 fps! If I can find some and they pattern like the 3" in that Benelli, I will be using them in my Winchester Model 1200 from now on.

I have 2 bxs of 20ga on order for a month now, 5's and 6's, nothing yet. They more or less already have that load out now. Winchester Lokd n Lethal Rooster. 2-3/4", 1-1/4oz of 4's, 5's and 6's. I was shooting them last year and they are awesome!!!!! I said earlier that my buddies dad is shooting them in a model 12. and they pattern amazing!!!!! I was shooting them at Trapshooting games like Annie Oakleys and BackPorch shoots in addition to my own reloads. Really look cool at night under the lights!!!! That polyresin goes out like a long white cloud like a bomb went off in a bag of flour!!!!!!! People were saying that I was loading flour in my shells and I bet them that I was shooting factory shells. No takers!! Would break clay birds well over 60yds without so much as a problem if I done my part and that was with 6's.

Those Rooster loads must not be using the same technology that the XR turkey loads are or Winchester would not just be recommending them for pheasants. I think I mentioned that to you before when you made that comment about them. The new turkey loads have a completely different order number on them that doesn't match the pheasant loads.

I have found that tubes in the .655 to be the tightest that I would shoot with 5's or 6's. I kinda lean towards the .660 or .665. I just find that they produce the most consistent patterns time after time with 5's or 6's. I have not shot the duplex loads, 7-1/2's or 4's that much unless the customer really wants it. They buy the shells and I give them the results and let them figure out where to go next. I just like how the 5's and 6's pattern for me and my set-up. I will back up my stack with a 3-1/2" Hevi-Shot load of 4's for JIC shot if needed or a 'yote looks like he may get too close for his comfort. And RPD63, I got my Winchester Rooster's at Gander Mtn. I just bought the last 6bxs of them last week. They are closing their doors by me and have stuff 15% off to clear out. I bought a bunch of other ammo as well. |

Eh it's not that great
I've also shot 3" Hevi-shot #4 and 3" Wingmaster HD #6 through my Comp-N-Choke too. Dead turkeys. |
Primos jellyhead with hevishot magblend works the best in my 835

I thought of giving my opinion on this. One choke that I have that works wonders when I use it is the X-factor Ulti-Full choke tube. It has great reviews online, and I give it 5 stars. I believe when I used my caliper to measure constriction, it read .695 constriction. I also use another choke tube I bought years ago that doesn't have any writing on it. I don't know the brand or the maker, but I do know that it is really tight. On paper at forty yards the turkey is DEAD. The constriction is .669 (17mm).

The best turkey chokes that I have used are the Hevishot Turkey Choke tubes.
Also, I am excited about the new Hevishot Hevi 18 TSS Turkey shells. |
Best Choke for 20G 870
