Turkeys shells

I have different guns that can handle 2 3/4, 3, or 3 1/2 shells. What would you guys recomend for shot size and load size?

Topgun 3006 01-25-2017 11:16 AM

Pray tell, what gun do your have that shoots a 2 2/3" shell? The best recommendation anyone can give is to get a variety of shells, pattern them out at 40 yards, and then use what gives the tightest pattern to blow Mr. Tom's head off!.

Give us an idea of what gun and choke your considering using and I'm sure someone can help you from there.

OP, no one can tell you which shell or shot size or gun to use. You need to buy some shells and go the patterning board and try the shells and guns and various chokes until you find the one that patterns best.

I can tell you I use a Remington 870 12ga. I prefer 3" 5 shot out of my gun. Each gun is different so you really need to try different loads.

My 3" and 3 1/2" in Remington and mossburg both love 6's but it varies with each gun I have seen patterned

Give Federal 3rd Degree a try. Has been a good patterning shell out of most of my guns so far.

I'd recommend Winchester 3.5" HV #5's turkey loads!!! Start there first then try other loads if you don't get d decent patters at 40+ yards

JoeA 01-30-2017 11:09 AM

Get your 3.5" gun, 2-3 turkey hunting friends, and 3-4 diff turkey loads and have fun! Your 3.5" gun should be able to handle anything from 2.75" on up to 3.5".

Recommendations: at least a 3" shell. Shot size #5 is a good starting point for lead shot. Once you get into the "hevi-stuff" then #6 or one of the blended shot loads might be an option. Personally, I like it simple.

You may be surprised at the results. And remember...a gobbler taken with a 2.75" shell is just as dead as one shot with a 3.5" shell.

Have fun, and good luck this spring!

I shoot 3.5" Hevi Shot Mag Blend out of my gun, not for the faint of heart.

Gamblinman 02-07-2017 06:52 PM

Store bought ammunition: Federal Heavyweight 7's

It hits like Thor's hammer.

I like the Magnum Blend shells from Hevishot in
both 3" and 3.5" load sizes

Mastevt 02-13-2017 07:10 AM

3in Mag blend in my 835. Jebs choke.

klums 02-13-2017 08:17 AM

I would start with Winchester long beard. I started shooting them and no other shell has compared to them.

Parrot Head 02-14-2017 06:38 AM

Just go to TSS and be done with it.

Rob in VT 02-20-2017 05:47 PM

I ordered a couple of boxes of Winchester Longbeards in 5 shot. Heard good things about them.

I found these are perfect through my SBE. Only short comings are price point but the results are too impressive to not use them. I patterned at 40 yards which is generally my personal outer limit and can see it would reach out to over 60 without any problem.

Use to shoot Nitro Company shells for years, but their crimps lacked quality control and most of the buffer would leak out.
Switched to the Winchester Long Beards myself and haven't looked back. The cost factor was worth the switch, yet alone the patterning ability of these shells.

I shoot the Magnum blend. With the $10 rebate Hevi Shot puts out each year, the price is not so bad.

kabic 03-07-2017 03:40 PM
