Decoys
 

Goin' Huntin' this weekend and was wondering if I should be using decoys and which ones (hen, jake) in the fall. I used them (2 jakes and a hen) during the spring hunt (my first time) and was pretty successful. Also, I' m still in the early stages of learning turkey calls so I want to keep it simple, if you could only do one call in the fall, what would it be?

Welcome to the boards bert,If I was only goin to be able to make one call in the fall it would be the kee-kee.As for decoys in the fall,you really don' t need them.Good Luck

i dont use decoys any more. a hunter spoted mine and snuck in to them, when he got about 50 yards, just over a little knoll. he cut down on them. hitting me in the leg and arm with a load of #6 shot. after he reallized what he had done, he ran as hard as he could. i was in the hospital for 3 days picking shot out of me. so my advise is not to use them........

as far as what call to use,,,,, try kee-kee and clucking every now and then yelp about 7 or 8 times. this is a lost call. it will bring the whole flock in....

I' m not a decoy user during the fall season either.The only time I use dekes in fact ,is early spring when the gobblers are still establishing pecking order!As far as one particular call it depends on the particular flock I' m working.If Ive broke them up I' ll call lost which includes keekees and lost yelps.If I' m attempting to bring the whole flock in I may use feeding type calls such as soft clucks and purrs.If they act interested I may get more aggressive!I wish I could say one call works all the time but the problem is not every hunting situation is the same.Match the right call to the right situation and thats the real key to the realism of the whole scenario.A clear understanding of this comes with time spent in the woods!!!Keep huntin.... Never used dekes during the fall...instead I concentrate on where the food is....find the food and the turkeys will be there.
