What is your go-to call?

What is the one call that you own that if you left home without it you would be willing to turn back for?

For me it has surprisingly become a Primos True Triple mouth call. I could run my trusty pot calls but without my mouth call I feel lost. I can go with nothing but a mouth call.

It's only be the last 6 years or so that I've gotten this way. For a long time I had to have an old Lohman ThunderDome. Before that it was a box call.

What about you?

Like you a mouth call usually finishes the game with me. I carry a custom box call and several custom pot calls that I start the game with, and when he starts coming closer I switch to my Knight & Hale half moon cutter, which enables me to have both hands on my gun and ready for when he shows up.

I have an older QB call, The Finisher. Is a small frame with a piece of round slate in it, no sound chamber. It's hard to get too loud and makes great small calls and tree yelps.

And like all great calls, they don't make it no more.

An HS Strut small box call along with a custom box call of about the same size is the main ones I would never leave home without. I don't have and have never used mouth calls and I've never felt that hindered without any in getting a bird in if he wants to come in. I can use them for loud, long distance calling to get a bird started and I have my gun up close to where I can get down on it to shoot such that I can use those calls to bring them in close.

I would say one of my Hooks mouth calls.

Oldtimr 03-10-2016 11:23 AM

A double reed diaphragm call.

Swamp_slayer 03-10-2016 01:46 PM

I have a primos old hen box call, a slate/ crystal with striker and a diaphragm mouth call used in the last 80 yds. If I have time I set up decoys but have probably shot twice the birds without them by running and gunning and just calling.

I use a M.A.D wooden push pin box call. Can't find my diaphram calls.

I like my 2 sided pot call that I have been using now for 2 years. It has glass on top and slate on the bottom and small enough to fit in my shirt pocket. Glass side is louder and the slate can be brought down to a nice quite call..

This season I will be trying out a gift made by a friend called a bark bone call It is a yelper that has birch bark on the end of it.. The first one my friend has ever made of this call. Now he is making quite a few of them.. It may end up being my go to call.. Not sure yet though..

Probably going to be this one. Aluminum over glass. I made it for turkey season last year, and paired up with an acrylic striker, had this guy all fired up. So much so, he even crossed a creek to get a face full of lead.

The one call I always have is the H.S. Strutt Double D youth mouth call, I pack all my go to calls in my jacket before leaving the house and many more go in the truck but I would not go back home for any off them unless I forgot all of them.

Western MA Hunter 03-11-2016 09:25 AM

just a good ol' 2.5 reed mouth call.. and a back up in case one breaks.
Picked up a couple Pecker Wrecker mouth calls for this season.

bald9eagle 03-13-2016 06:50 PM

All my pot calls are now custom. I have an aluminum, copper, and ceramic that I made and two made by Kyle Osborne of Knockout Custom Calls. Words can't describe those two. You'd just have to see them on Facebook.

Hunter Specialities® Ring-Zone™ Slate pot call with a hickory striker is my go to, most reliable call.

Arrowmaster 03-14-2016 08:12 PM

My Fire and Iced glass call and my Fire and Iced mouth calls. Love em

JW 03-14-2016 08:17 PM

My go to call. Every call Arrowmaster drops!

He keeps me well supplied.

But honestly I have no one favorite. So my go to call is the one the bird decided to answer at that time!

I have a old H&S Strut Raspy hen box call from like the early 90s that has called in more turkeys for me then anything else and no matter what they always call back.

Fox Hound 03-22-2016 12:13 PM

Primos Hook Hunter mouth calls would be the ones I'd turn back for !

neb 03-25-2016 11:15 AM

I put some corn in a coffee can and start rattling it around and they start running my way.

I should try that across the road from a guy that feeds them.. But, that most likely will get me into trouble because of the no baiting laws. That even though all feeding of them is supposed to stop 2 weeks prior to hunting season. This guy does not hunt them but enjoys feeding them.. He has some free ranging chickens so he puts extra out for the turkeys and gets away with it..

neb 03-27-2016 04:47 PM

Lol. You don't want to feed them just use the corn and the coffee can as a call.
