Factory choke?

Anybody hunt with the factory choke that comes with the gun?Going to purchase a Mossberg 835.If so how does this gun with factory choke preform?

Not bad but you'll get a better pattern with an after market choke. I use a kicks gobbling thunder in an .680 constriction with 3 1/2" Winchester Supremes. Deadly combo. Haven't switched to longbeards and don't know if I will from what I've read on short shots.

Pattern it and see. Can't hurt to try and you might be pleasantly surprised.

I think the Mossberg 835 comes with an XXfull turkey choke. I wouldn't hesitate to carry it in the woods with that.

For several years I carried an old 870 that I never patterned. That was before I knew to pattern my guns. I eventually bought a Jellyhead choke and screwed in it but never really patterned it.

Phil Bourjaly did a Gun Nuts segment on chokes, factory vs aftermarket. These days, with improvements and testing, many factory chokes compare favorably with aftermarket chokes.

With that, get together with a friend or a few, and test different turkey loads. I'll bet the choke your Mossy comes with will do the job. Just be mindful that lead (incl. copper shot too) patterns a little differently that the "hevi" stuff. Check with folks you know, and you might be able to borrow 1-2 aftermarket tubes.

I hunt with the factory choke that came with my Mossberg 935, Ultra Full .695. It puts a whole lot of #6 shot in the head and neck area of a turkey, I don't shoot beyond 40 yards and I prefer closer, but I am confident I could kill a bird further but I will not try. While I could use 31/2 inch shells I use 3 inch, there is only one degree of dead.
