1 3/4" Club

First I am not trying to brag. Just figured some might like to see the monster I shot on Tuesday. I have held off shooting a few toms since the season opened April 25th because I knew there were a couple big toms in the area but was still surprised when I rolled this dude over. He came in a 11 am to my calling with 2 other toms and he wasn't even the strutter. Just the one that finally after what seemed like hours, came close enough for a shot. Talk about a cautious bunch of toms now I know why. I have already killed a nice triple bearded bird with busted 1" spurs in Texas and figured that would be the highlight of the year but! I have always dreamed of killing one with 1 1/2" or better spurs but never really thought it was a possibility until I rolled this guy over on Tuesday morning. I only have increments of 8ths inch on my tape measure and both spurs touched the 1 6/8" mark with one going slightly over it. I am going to keep this location quiet until next year as maybe I can get on his 2 brothers :D .

Stats
weight-19lbs 10 oz
beard-9 6/8"
spurs-1 6/8"

I hate to break the bad news but that is just one of our smaller Ontario Toms :arms: :)

Congrats on your great bird. I'm not in this club

Congrats on your bird first of all! Then wow! I have not even come close to that mark! Those spurs are something else!

jdb_77 05-17-2014 05:23 PM

Congrats on the big bird!!!!!!

Congrats on the tom. I have had several birds I have shot and said,"I can never top this one in a million years". First, it was my first mature tom weighing in at 25 lbs (scored 65). Then I shot one that had three spurs on each leg. Main spurs with nubs on each side of them. Then I got the chance to shoot a couple of Rios. This year I got my longest beard at 12.5 inches (scored 67).

There will be many first. Now I need a multiple bearded bird and a bearded hen. A smokey or albino would be nice too.

Congrats on a fine bird...

I see a gobbler he gets it!!! If he's got good spurs that's a bonus

You the man

Great bird and I was going to ask where in MI you got him and then read you're in Ontario. That tag on him is the same as our 2014 tag!

I also hunt in southern Michigan but the tag I usually get is orange.

Thanks for the comments guys I never thought I would shoot a bird with spurs near this long but I guess you never know. Also and I will likely get a lot of flack for this but I knew from hunting in this area a long time that a couple big toms were hanging around with big hooks so I was holding out hoping to get onto one and when these 3 came in I knew they were the big ones just never figured this big. :D This area also gets a lot of pressure as just about anyone from the area can get permission so I guess you never know were the big boys can hang out and survive! Also they only gobbled once and yelped the other times to my calls. I actually thought they were hens coming at first until I saw the red heads and the strutter. :confused0024:

beautiful bird.. great set of hooks... I shot a bird one year in CT with 1.5" spurs... have never had one even close to that since.

jepcho 05-21-2014 04:34 PM

That is just awesome man! Maybe someday I can join that club with you

Mr. Longbeard 05-30-2014 10:50 AM

Friend of mine made it lol if only he measures the spurs... I measured them and he didn't make it... :s4:

Timbrhuntr 05-30-2014 11:27 AM

I ain't the slightest bit worried about that. You can come and measure them anytime you want  .

Never got one that big myelf. Inch and a half seems to be about the limit on spur length in the areas I hunt. Nice bird by the way

hookspur 06-07-2014 03:49 PM

That's a helluva tom...congrats!!!!
