What is the traveling range for turkeys?
This might be a stupid question but what would you say is the distant turkeys travel from when they hit the ground. I have hunted them for years and really never have thought about it.
I don't believe I have had a more difficult year hunting turkeys then this year. This morning I had birds on both sides of where my blind is set up. It seems like one day they are around very close then I won't see them for a few days. I will be out about 3 o'clock and see what I can do. |
I know that rios like to walk, not sure of the other subspecies. I imagine the have a decent size home range as well

I've heard 4-5 miles but it really depends upon the range and layout of the property...

Thanks for your input. I do know maybe not in all situation but they don't always leave the tree go the same place each day. I have seen them head different directions many time through out the years.

the ones I have seen usually end up back roosting where they came down from but they go all over during the day. If I had to guess around these parts they have quite a large range that they cover. I seems like it is larger during the spring for the Toms. The hens stay close to the nesting area.

Where I hunt, there are many smaller wooded areas separated by fields. There seems to be a few hens per wooded area, and the toms seem to travel from area to area to visit each hen. This is probably why you see turkeys for a few days, then nothing for several days. Sometimes it is just a guessing game.
