Please define Spring, as I forgot what it is up here, LOL!

turkey harvester 03-26-2014 09:27 AM

I'm going to have to agree, the birds here in Mo are normally tearing it up by now and I've only heard 1 bird. He gobbled twice.

EFH 03-26-2014 02:15 PM

I agree too.....last year our woods were green when season opened. Our dogwoods are just now about to bloom, and were almost 2 weeks in. Not much cover out there yet, gotta sit still and watch not to get too close to one on the limb.

buckman11 03-26-2014 06:27 PM

yeah here in sw missouri today i seen a flock of 40 and a flock of 20. which scares me because i fear they have not yet broken their winter pattern with only a few weeks till the season opens

Teebugg 03-26-2014 06:53 PM

Agreed. Up here its still snowing and the weather has no idea what it wants to do. No green to speak of at all. Last spring was nice...id take just a small chunk of spring right now. Still time left as may 1 is our opener, but i think its going to be a tough season if the weather doesnt break soon.

Phil from Maine 03-27-2014 05:09 AM

If some one can find spring.. Please send a day or 2 up here so we can have some idea on what the heck it looks like. Still windy today from the pounding we got from a blizzard yesterday and last night.. This stuff just wants to hang around until next year I am thinking...

livcoop 03-27-2014 06:20 AM

They are still flocked up here in Southern Vermont but the strutters are doing there thing. Saw a flock with 6 strutters and a couple other red heads this morning and another flock with another strutter.

JW 03-27-2014 06:35 AM

The snow will disapear and it will get hot!
Thus no spring what so ever

My prediction

Gamblinman 03-27-2014 07:03 AM

I was in deep South Texas last weekend..birds were gobbling good, but still running in bachelor groups. If you called up one, you called up a dozen. I had 21 jakes in my hen decoys at one time.

Calling for the temps to be in the 50's starting this afternoon!!! Look's like the winter freeze is starting to subside!!!

thelukai1100 03-27-2014 09:44 PM

Here in Maine, I would say there's about 8 inches left of snow on the ground in the woods.
and the season starts on the last Saturday in April, so I haven't been to pumped up for turkey season. that is until Monday when I saw 8 different toms on a 10 mile radius from my house! 2 of which were strutting!

It appears the turkeys have split up, the Groups that I saw where all 1 tom and 3-5 hens.
however I did see one group with just 4 toms in it.

Tundra10 03-27-2014 10:55 PM

Spring aint but like a week old.

I am not sure exactly what part of maine you are in but, we have a little over 3 feet of snow in the woods here.. Yes I am in Maine also!! So I am guessing you are from Southern Maine where all those signs are stuck up on almost every tree???

Yeah I'm in southern Maine, not sure what you mean by signs stuck on almost every tree however.

looking at this picture on a computer I can tell I circled a tree instead of a bird :nonono2: Damn *********** are to small.

luckily My cousin owns the property next to where I took this picture. I've always hunted there on opening day, but the turkeys stay hung up in that posted Field. hopefully I can outsmart them this year.

Phil from Maine 03-28-2014 08:22 AM

Right where you circled the tree is one of those signs.. I know when ever we travel down that way we just turn and head back north.. No sence in hunting down south for us with all those signs we keep seeing.. That is sad but some areas up this way is getting the same results because of a few individuals and folks moving into Maine.. It is a mixed bag of things and discourages a lot of folks that is for sure..

JW 03-28-2014 08:28 AM

Well last night we got another 6 inches of heavy wet snow.

swampbuster 03-28-2014 05:47 PM

Better late than early for me

MZS 03-28-2014 05:53 PM

Spring? Knee deep snow is making me think it might not ever come! The sun still has not been taken away, so at some point (like mid-May) all the cold weather pouring down from the Arctic will be beat back.

And MN, MI, upstate NY, and Maine also got this blast.

Phil from Maine 03-29-2014 02:19 AM

I clearly know the feeling MZS !! Our open water fishing starts this coming Tuesday.. That is a big joke this year as well.. But, we did get rain yesterday and a storm moving in today is calling for more rain in my area with flood warnings. That is what I am hoping we do not get is massive flooding. I do want all that white stuff to vacate the place though. This year has been a long winter for us all every where..

Adrian J Hare 04-02-2014 04:59 AM

Still have a good 2 feet on the level here. I got home from Florida and had to take up the carpet in the basement because of water so Spring must be close! Not impressed to say the least ...

JW 04-02-2014 07:24 PM

I am teaching a Learn to Hunt Program Friday and thent he students get to turkey hunt Saturday - Free.
And we are under a Winter Storm Warning till late Friday night.....

Dang!

JW

Phil from Maine 04-02-2014 10:15 PM

I hope you are able to get the students out on a turkey hunt JW.. I do not like the news of this new storm either..

Our last one came in as rain and then it extended itself to an extra day.. It came in as all rain and freezing rain the first day and night ofit. Then when it was supposed to end it came back around to freezing rain and sleet. The during the night all snow which left us with around 7 inches of it. The past 2 days though has been up in the 40 range.. I am hoping it stays above freezing for the most part..

w123t 04-03-2014 06:29 AM

Toms were gobbling good yesterday morning in
mid coastal Maine and again last night as they went
to roost. About 90 % bare ground here with just
patches of snow remaining. My friend in Northern
Maine says the snow is still half away up the
telephone poles, if he is Turkey hunting up there
on April 28th it will be on snow shoes.

Phil from Maine 04-03-2014 06:41 AM

It is 48 out right now so hopefully it will be in the 50s today.. But yeah in this area the snow is still 3 feet deep in the woods here.. Take a drive up threw Washington County and you can see how deep the snow is.. Rain would surely be a good thing if it is light and foggy.. The snow will be pretty well gone if the temps stay up the way it is right now.. It should be prime hunting for us the first week. That is what I am predicting.. We have no bare fields right now but that can change rather quickly with the warmer temps..

Phil from Maine 04-10-2014 09:17 AM

I took a drive this morning heading up to where I normally turkey hunt at.. Yup, still a lots of snow in that area as I had figured there would be. I did get to see 16 deer out where there was patches of bare ground. Also saw a woodcock which is the first one of the year for me to see. On the way back a hawk flying around looking for a lunch. It was different for the place to be like that after the last few years of it being bare by now..

Here is what a lot of the drive looks like right now..

Teebugg 04-11-2014 05:09 AM

In the 60's this week, and 50's next week. Finally saw 5 strutters yesterday! Looking like a late spring will be a good thing!

Exactly what I am thinking as well.. Our season up here opens on April 28th so there is still plenty of time for the snow to leave..
