turkey mites

has anyone else heard of a turkey mite? If so when you get bit how the heck do you get rid of them? Just came back from Land Between the Lakes in KY and am covered head to toe with bites.

I' ve heard of mites in turkeys but have not heard of them biting a person. These mites are feather mites that stick on or in the feathers of the birds. Sure you have not got into Ticks or chiggers ?

How was your hunt at Land Between the Lakes, I' ve heard it is a great place to visit ?...BT

Thx A.J.H. It seems I layed down in a bed of poison oak or something. Anyway, LBL is great....deer and turkeys everywhere, and the fishing at KY Lake is world class. We caught several 3-5 lb smallies.

RE: turkey mites

Having hunted LBL several times, I' m guessing it was seed ticks that got you. Barely big enough to see. It' s not unheard of for folks to duct tape their shirt & pants cuffs in that part of the state while hunting in warm weather. First good frost usually does them in. A few years ago while bowhunting at West Kentucky WMA (near LBL), a fellow in camp showed me how bad his lower leg was after getting into them. It was ugly.

Sure is a neat place to be, isn' t it?
