They are legal here in Maine. Just like any other
call there are days they work great there are other
times they don't. I've used them to call in birds
and I've used regular calls as well---saw absolutely
no difference in the excitement level of bringing the
bird in ---although I do allow that it does require
more practice/skill to do it with regular calls. To
me it's about like the difference between hunting
deer with a recurve bow or a compound bow---
they are both fun but the recurve requires a lot
more practice.

Because Turkey hunting is relatively new here in Maine
here are very few hunters here that are "really"
good at calling---maybe that's why it's legal here.

Another point, why???

Part of the fun and bragging rights to turkey hunting is calling the bird in...

What fun is it fo have an electronic box call them???

I've hunted turkeys since the 70s, started with only a Lynch box call...I killed turkeys then as well...Even today, I just use a box, a slate, several strykers and several mouth calls...

The real trick to calling a gobbler in is call him to an area where he wants to go and catch him when he is looking for a hen...

Quite simple acrually....

I just cant see using an electronic call. All situtations are different while hunting. For one how the bird is acting and which call to use in that situtation. I guess Im not up on the electronic call and if you hit a button for yelping. Then another button for cutting or for purrs. I can say for sure using an electronic call is not in my future. Id rather call the birds in on my own. Ive done it myself for every bird Ive killed.

He still wont have the ability to switch it up and play with a tom like you will. You can vary your calling much better at a moments notice

Another problem with electronic calls is,Ya just can't put any feeling into your callin.I think that is an important factor

Let me be clear, that I think someone that is an
excellent caller, that can use various box calls,
slate/glass or aluminum pot calls, maybe wingbone
and especially is good with a mouth call is the
real Turkey hunter. I freely admit I'm not that
person, especially because I just can't seem
to get a mouth call to work.

I am relatively new to Turkey hunting and I do
get a major "kick" out of it. I'll use whatever call
is legal and helps me bring a bird in close enough
to kill cleanly. Most of my Turkeys have been
taken with a 20 guage. I think the real fun is getting
them in close. Most of my Turkeys have been taken
under 30 yards and my goal with a 20 is not to
shoot beyond 40 yards. I have finally broken down
and gotten a 12 guage this year but my goal will
still be to get birds within 40 yards.

In summary an electronic call is definitely not
equal to an excellent Turkey caller.

Not legal in WI.

And you don't need to be a Championship Turkey caller........those folks on the NWTF stage - that type of calling is for you, for your entertainment and not the real bird!

Master a simple Yelp and a Cluck ~ Know when to use it and when not too and you will kill birds...... Heck Even a Caveman can do it!

Yup, you get the right two year old bird and he'll
Come to any call that even sounds remotely
Like a hen.

Then there are the tom's like the second one
I took in Maine last spring. He gobbled like
Crazy on the roost came down and
Headed directly away from me. I played
With him for almost 3 hours, moved and
Set up closer several times, he' come
In to 50-60 yards parade back and forth
And when I didn't come to him he'd
Wander off and start gobbling again.
I tried every call I had with me
Several different box calls, a glass
Pot,and a push button call.
Finally I tried the electronic
Call,my quests is he hadn't
Heard one before---it did
The trick. My 20 gauge
Did him in at about 40 yards as
Started to gobble for the last time.

I am another one that uses an electronic call from time to time. It is a legal way of hunting up here. But, I do not find that it works any better other than to help locate the turkeys. I overall like to use my box caller the most.
Now why the arguement? Like some have stated it is not hunter against hunter but rather hunter against the turkey?? Correct? This same type arguement was brought up last year only over turkeys in a tree or fence post type of thing. It is not legal to shoot any turkey that is not on the ground. But it is legal in some states.. So the point is again why try and place hunter against hunter?
