Default Mating behavior ---Almost

I watched a group of 4 Jakes, 1 Tom and 1 hen this
morning. The hen would lay down, lift her tail in a most
suggestive manner. The Tom would strutt around behind her
and she would immediately jump up swing around to face
him, sometimes give a feeble peck in his direction or
flap her wings in his face. Take a few steps away then
lay down and again raise her tail. This went on over and
over again for at least 5-6 minutes. Occasionally one of the
Jakes would try to horn in on the action and the big boy would
just shoulder him out of the way, most of the time they were just strutting nearby. Eventually, the hen appeared to get bored
with what was going on and started feeding and ignoring
the Tom at that point I'm fairly sure from his behavior that
he just went ahead and finished on his own.

So, my question is do you think this was a hen just starting
to think about mating or was it a young hen that didn't
really know what to do?

Well top gun, perhaps your speaking from
Personal experience---but, this was a really
Nice Tom. I keep pretty good track of the
Birds in my backyard. Of the nine Toms
I've been watching this winter/spring I
Do believe this one is King of the area.
