Mossberg 500 20ga. Choke?
I normally hunt with my Mossberg 835 for turkey, but was thinking of switching things up and may at times opt for my Mossberg 500 20ga. what brand turkey choke to use? Reason I ask is, I can find turkey chokes for a 20ga. but having a problem finding one for the Mossberg 500 20ga.

To the OP, I have been wondering the same thing. I have searched sites such as CTD, but they have no reviews of anything. My wife has a bantam Mossberg 500 20 ga., and I am planning to make it perform better than it has in the past. With a full choke, I wouldn't go farther than 20 yards with it. It is certainly more capable than that. Anyone on here that has some ACTUAL experience with a 20 ga Mossberg 500?

I have been using a 500 20 gauge for about 3 years now. I was using a .555 IC choke and heavy 13 6s and 7s and getting decent patterns. I know there are guys out there using sumtoy .562 chokes and getting good numbers. I have also heard that some of these chokes give good numbers TG SSX, Undertaker 570, PG Tempest 570 and 555, RSF, PG 555 Ported . I think most are shooting the fed hwt #7s also or the heavy 13 7s.I however have been bitten by the TSS bug and have been using it for about 2 years now and loading my own.

I was told the Primos Tight-Wad is a decent choke, and only about $25.00
|
A guy at a local shop today recommended the Sumtoy .562 to me. Said it is what is in his son's gun, and puts great patterns. Wanted $65 for it, tho. Seemed a little steep...is that about right for those chokes?

Also, I wonder how the Hev-Shot choke would work with 20 gauge 500. That is what I decided on for my 835 after testing several. It performs wonderfully.

65 bucks sounds like about right. I know that he has put a lot of work into his chokes. I have even heard of him reworking some chokes that guys were having trouble with. I am thinking of trying one from him but I am getting such good numbers with my set up right now that I don't want to mess with it. I believe he works out of somewhere in Georgia. Here is his web site.

Primos says to use HeviShot 13 with the Tight-Wad choke

Go to Wrights Superior Chokes and see what they have. I have one in my wifes 11-87 Premier and it shoots like you cannot believe with Hevi-13's. Stewarts chokes have set more world records than any other chokes out there!!!!! They set the first world record with a 20ga in competition with Hevi-13's!!! They are called The Swarm.
|
I went with a SSX for my Mossberg 500 20ga., going to purchase Hevi-Shot 13, either #6 or #7
|
Let us know how it shoots in your gun. Like I said I have heard good things about the fed hwt 7s and the heavy 13 7s.

Thank you for the pictures....I'm going to try the HeviShot 13, #6 with a SSX choke

I ordered a Swarm .555 choke for my wife's Mossberg 20 gauge earlier this week. Hopefully it will pattern well enough that I will feel good "borrowing" it for most of the season!

I found that going to a Bass Pro shop they have a lot of choke selections there for a variety of shotguns. You will not find the majority of them on their web site.

its to late but the .555 by Pure Gold ...

Those Wrights Swarm choke tubes are pure death on the turkeys with Hevi-13's!!!! Thats who Hevi-Shot partnered up with when Stewart set the first world record with and has continued since. I have been going to stewart since the 70's for gun and choke tube work. He also has a shop set up at the World Shooting Complex, AKA..The Grand, and does tons of work down there as well.
If I remember correctly, they had 43 pellets in the 3" circle at 40yds and they have to use over the counter ammo to do these events. |
