I think Will Primos said it best. He said in the old days when you shot a bird you were up in a hurry to do the Texas-Two Step on the bird's head. With the improvements in chokes/guns/shells a well placed shot is all it takes.

alot of responses here but the bottom line is... none of us can tell you the best shell for your gun. only you can figure that out with testing.
I've screwed up more than once letting the bird get too close , i had to change my set up...I could nail a bird at 60 yds. but I like to get them as close as possible, shame on me, lol...the gun/choke/load combo I was using was great but not for those close shots...I recently got a Mossberg 835 12 gauge so I spent yesterday trying 9 different loads at 40 yds., then I took the top 3 and shot from 20 yds., the Turkey Supreme won....#5 1 3/4 oz. 3''. You have to know what works best in your set up before entering the woods...borrow some loads if you need too. |
Try Federal PremiumTurkey loads . I use their 3.5" #5 in my mossberg and it patterns extremely well compared to other brands that I have tried. I have shot turkey past 40yds.

Anyone tried the Hornady rounds? I bought some 3" stuff today for my 870. Jellyhead 660.

Cant beat Nitro Company shells, but they are expensive so...
I really like(d) Winchester Supreme Double-X Magnums in 3.5" 2 1/4 oz. #5 |
Definitely think that the HeviShot Magnum Blend and Hevi13 shells are the best turkey loads on the market today....

really aint saying anything to use a 14 gauge and only kill at 30 yards. esp when there are guys using 410's with heavier than lead loads and killing at 30-35 yards. if you are of the old school of call em close then there is not need for such a big bore.
