New Guy needs suggestions....

I have a Rem 1100 12ga 3"mag with a .655 Hastings choke. I've been shooting Rem & Win #4 turkey loads. I'm not happy with the performance at 40 yrds. Can someone suggest a choke (Size-ID and Make) so I can turn this gun into a 40/50 yard performer with #4 shot? Help...

you could change your shells and keep the choke...i would suggest the Hevi shot mag blends.

Try the Nitro Turkey number 5's works real well for me.

As you can see, if you find the "right" choke & ammo combination; you'll have a 40/50 yard gun

Go to the nitro shell web site. There you should find the info you need

It would be easier to find a nice shell that compliments the choke. Try a few different loads. You will find a 40/50 slayer.

The individual pellets in a load of lead 4s will kill way out there but I have rarely encounted a shotgun that would produce what I called a good pattern with lead 4s at 40 yards. Never seen one that produced a good lead 4 pattern at 50.

This is the catch 22 situation of lead. Lead 4s and 5s will kill way out there if a pellet hits the right spot. But the patterns start falling apart badly at 35 yards. Lead 6s can get you a good pattern to 40 yards with the right gun and choke but at 40 yards you are on the edge of their consistently lethal range. At 50, you are beyond it.

That's where the denser than lead stuff comes in. First it out patterns lead and not just by a little bit. Second it penetrates better so you can shoot smaller shot and stay lethal farther out. Smaller sized shot means more pellets inside the shell and therefore denser patterns. Denser than lead 6 shot in Hevi-13, Wichester Extended range or the custom Nitros will kill to 50 yards and with the right choke maintain a killing pattern to that range. Good chokes for this shot are the Heavy-13 chokes, Primos Jellyhead, Rhino, and Indian Creek BDS.

I am in the same camp as those suggesting that you work with the shot shell rather than change the choke tube. I use a .654 and went through several shot shells before settling in on my choice.

In my book, at the 40-50 yard range, regardless of shot shell, you are at the edge of consistent lethal range. I, like probably many other avid turkey hunters, have killed gobblers that far out or farther. I killed a nice gobbler several years back that turned out to be about 60 yards out .... frankly I had miss judged the distance and was thingking more like 45. But I am not all that comfrotable with shots beyond 40-45 yards and try by best to wait until the gobbler closes to within 30 or so.

Just try # 6 smaller shot = less distortion = more pellets in the kill zone.
= Better pattern.

Choke for Remington

The only choke I use on my 870 is a TruGlo Gobble Stopper Extreme .665. At 40 yards it will put 196 pellets in an 8" paper plate. I've tried several loads and these results are with Hevi-13, 3", #7s. I don't have access to a longer shotgun range but with those numbers I'm confident I could cleanly take a turkey out to 50-55 yards. Hope this helps.

Try the HeviShot Magnum Blend shells.....you get several shot sizes in one shell. They are extremely effective and hold amazing patterns.
Good Luck

I have a Rem 11-87 and have used it the past 20 yrs. I have a similar set-up as I use a Hasting Choke 0.665 and I use 3 inch Winchester Supreme #4 Copper Plated. I see no reaso to change to any other type shot as this has performed for me flawlessly - is far cheaper than Hevi shot and the other brands.
My set-up also includes a Nikon Monarch turkey Pro Scope and this gun is a 55 yarder if needed.
But I am proud to say with all the birds I have taken - my average is still 21 yards........some far closer and a few beyond that but I try to get them in close - so close so I can see the fuzz on their head.

I never believed in a scope for turkeys until I tried the Nikon Monarch Turkey Pro. It is absolutely amazing and I absolutely killed with it this year. It makes it real difficult to miss.

mw_Guerilla 09-24-2012 12:32 PM

the only way to see what works is to put alot of time in at the range. I went probably 10 times the month before spring turkey season trying all different combinations of chokes and ammo.
on my Remington 870 20 gauge I stuck w/ a Primo's Jellyhead choke and 3'' Winchester double X turkey loads. I also like Hevi-Shot Magnum shells. They both shoot really tight patterns out to about 40-43 yards; which is way beyond what I even feel comfortably taking a bird.

I am suggesting that you work. I like probably many other avid turkey hunters with the shot shell rather than change the choke tube in the same camp as those. Anice gobbler several years back that turned out to be about 60 yards the patterns start falling apart badly.
