how far with lead #6's
 

I know most hard core turkey hunters these day's hunt with some kind of hevi shot...

I was curious about the people that use lead #6's... whats the farthest you killed a turkey???

I've always used #5's and #4's because of everything i've read about the kenetic energy of lead #6's not having enough out to 40 yards to ethicly get the job done...

I've killed turkeys out to 45 yards with 5's and i killed one bird at 56 paces witth #4's...

i have killed at least a dozen birds from 37-47 yds with #6's its all i used for 10 years. i killed one bird that i grossly mis judged at 57yds. there was a dip in the feild would never have tried it but i thought he was about 40-45. doesnt matter though. one shot dropped and flopped. when a bird hits 45 i have never even second guessed the shot and have never had one get up. the one bird that did get up was only 18 steps and i only hit him with the edge of the pattern.
bottom line is make sure your gun and choke will pattern the #6's.

Man I would of never thought that lead 6's would have the energy to do a 45+ yard shot...

I may have to reconcider them!!! They do pattern much better...

There is alot of pellets in #6s and it only takes a few in the right spot

I've never had to shoot more than 35yds with most 20-25ydsIf I had to guess I would say somewhere around 45 would be max for certain kills.

I personally believe 45 yards should be your max. I like them close enough to hit them with the wadding!!!!!!!!!!!!1

#6s should be fine out to 40 yards. Your gun and choke tube come into play here too. Also, are you wanting to use 2 3/4", 3", or 3 1/2"? I'm sure that would have some effect as well. Best thing you can do is pattern your gun at that distance and see how the pattern is. If in doubt, call that bird in a few yards closer.

The only way to answer that question. Is see how you shoot on paper. Most hunters have their preferred ranges. Its the range you can confidently knock one in the noggin, and put him down. Your choke / load combo is the ticket. I wont say what ranges i've taken some birds at. But my personal range, where I wont second guess myself or my set up. Is 45 yds and in. 6's,5's or any load in the right set up, can take em out. And out to 50 yds if a shot is needed. The other limitation I put on myself is the type of terrain. Field birds or deepwoods birds? I will never consider a 50 yd shot in the woods. Too many variables in there. Unseen things can jump in the way. Good luck with your set up. Hope ya smoke some.

I agree with Browtine7 and try to limit my shots to 40 yards or less. I have been using copper plated buffered #6s that Winchester makes, but all these turkey loads are getting so expensive that I may just go back to my #5 or #6 pheasant loads like I used to use, especially since I don't try to stretch the distance like you can with hevi shoot.

I've killed all my turkeys with lead. Never had a problem even out to 50 yards.
